I recently found out about Jimmy Bruno, first saw him on a live performance as a guest of Frank Vignola. An amazing guitar player. I also binged his videos and his style of presentation in without a doubt straight talking. it kind of brought me to your channel, as a guitar player of mature years I'm a relative new comer to jazz. Last four years or so.and in that time I've mover away from rock and blues into chord melody and chord based approach to my soloing. There are so many lessons on youtube finding something that resonates and brings people back is not easy. I've found your teaching style to be both instructive and easy to follow and I will be a regular visitor. You are a very good teacher. I learned along time ago to ignore the voices of doubt, I never thought I'd be playing jazz guitar let alone composing tunes in the style. Having recorded and released two albums and being halfway through a third I know I can. Don't let anything or anyone tell you what you cannot do. How go and do it. I wish you well

Dear Tina, thank you for this video. I just listened to it, while I was walking home from the bus station. I just couldn't stop listening to your words. At the end you even made me cry, because you were talking right out of my heart. I just visited a jam session and had a lot of struggle with all the things you described, like negative thoughts and the realisation that a stage situation is different to the comfort zone at home, but I also think that it is my purpose in this world to make people happy with my music. So I never will stop playing even if that means low pay checks and carrying heavy amps around. You just gave me the a little more trust, that it is all worth it. Thank you❤

I think what it boils down to is we don’t live in New York. I think internationally there’s a certain amount of laziness associated with the standards rep (mea culpa btw) and people either almost turn their nose up at them and just play them on functions or get in to them really deep and become straightahead/bop specialists. In contrast, all pro guitarists in NYC regardless of what kind of music they are known for seem to be VERY serious about the songs… Moreno, shepik, Kreisberg, whoever.
@tinajackel Жыл бұрын
Yes i think that´s true - i think in New York people are sort of "soaked" in the culture of playing jazz standards. Many people know the melodies of many standards regardless of being a jazz aficionado ( i heard , dont know if that´s true) and also so much knowledge to be gained just be meeting so many great jazz musicians..I imagine ...here in Berlin the emphasis is a lot on the free scene and more exploratory music in my eyes
@kysnr Жыл бұрын
@@tinajackel @JazzGuitarScrapbook -It perhaps is generational as well, I dismissed my parent's tastes in music- big band and swing when I was a teenager in the 60s. I internalized so many standards by osmosis, that I have an easier time learning the changes and * feeling and hearing* - ( in the US, but not NY )

Man did I need to see this. I’m 71, a jazz player. I’ve been playing along time. I was trained back in the 70s from an old school jazz guitar teacher in NY Joe Monk. I now live in a culturally deprived area but I play with a outstanding fellow NY musician. Lately I don’t know why, but I’ve hit a big wall. I’m tired and totally uninspired. After 62 years of playing, I’ve gotten jaded and a bit cynical. It’s very frightening, because I love the guitar and music, it’s been my life. I related to everything you said here. I’m a big fan of Jimmy too. I’ve communicated with him on occasion. Jam sessions are hard. You are there to kick ass wether you want to or not. I hear you about gigs. Here it’s really tough. Anyway your videos are great and this one especially really helped with my ennui I’m suffering from. All the best and thanks!

Of course thanks for your share!! Great message

thank you for sharing this! I think you're right, there's so much deeper feeling in that A half-diminished. I too had been playing the Am7 (because it does work in a v-I way, so sounds okay and even correct), when I saw this I went and played it and tried to guess what the right chord might really be, and then came up with D#maj7 (a sort of half-step approach from above) which is almost there, and has cool voice leading, but the A half-diminished has better and cooler voice leading because of the shared pedal tone that doesn't move. And when I played the half-diminished it had the greatest emotional effect, which the D#maj7 was starting to have but couldn't quite match. So cool! And it made me want to linger on that chord when I played it.
