I wasn't thrilled with him as a president, but I TOTALLY respect the man himself. That is a life well lived, and in service. :-) I heard him speak about some of it once, and it was incredibly interesting. He accomplished some incredible goals, one of the most major being the eradication of the Guinea worm, which caused unimaginable human suffering up to that point.

I was able to shake President Jimmy Carter's hand when he arrived at Fairchild AFB after the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in May of 1980, I was a part of the 92d Security Police Squadron at the base and was hand picked by the Division Commander to secure the air control tower as Air Force One arrived. I was given a direct order from one of the Secret Service agents to shoot first, ask questions later if anyone other than him tired to enter the tower. No one tried, He then took me and placed me in the reception line to greet the President and I still had both of my firearms!
