I was diagnosed 2 years after this was released & it became my song to listen to whenever I was feeling like crap! Almost 20 years later & when I feel like crap,like today,I seek it out & sing along! Ok,we have come a long way with funding,therapies etc,but we DO still need public figures like Somerville,Elton, Annie Lennox to keep AIDS/HIV in the public awareness.It seems like this disease will never be fully destigmatised,but hey,we'll keep on fighting,YES?! Love you,Jimmy!

I'am not gay yet I love Jimmy Somerville's music and his talent and from an interview I see is a really genuine lovely man. I think people who hate music and people just because they are gay are really sad bastards and need to get a life other than criticising people for their sexual gender. +Elek Ekberg He didn't do it all on his own. He ius one of many people can thank but do not place him on a pedistal. If "nobody really gives a damn" was true then "Take Me To Church" would not have been made. We have made massive leaps in my lifetime alone but it seems we are getting complacent which, even in the song, is not a good thing to be in the fight for equality. This applies not just to gay people as they can be just as prejudiced, biggoted and hateful as any other community because they are above all things people with all the faults and beauty that implies.

Elek Ekberg Then you get it in the neck from both sides. Believe it or not in the area of prejudice I think bisexuals can have it worse. You say you like people to be ordinary. What is ordinary or normal? Being camp or bitchy is ordinary/normal to those that are, as is being "butch" for some gay women. I never use the word straight acting for gay people who aren't camp, because acting imples some level of deciet. Some of the campest men I have met have actually been straight. The ones that put it on could be doing so because that is what they think they should be like to be accepted. I used to go out with a mate when he wanted to go on the scene and believe me I was not one who would fit in, infact I stood out in all the clubs, because I had hair long enough to reach my ares, I am 6ft if you want to have something to give an image of the length. I am overweight, I wear what I feel comfortable in as I see no point in spending money on names and being uncomfortable subconcioulsy as opposed to physically. I would dance even with my total lack of rythm and grace. The looks I got were obviously ones of disgust or distatse, and so blatant even I with my difficulty, in interpreting facial expressions, could see them clearly. I was basically his comfort blanket and I was fine with that as for me a good night out is one where I have had fun. Wehn I am out with my friends that is what I have no matter the venue, a pub is a pub and a club is a club to me. If people are behaving in away that is comfortable to them and not harming someone else then they should never feel ashamed of themselves regardless of gender, orientation, race, gender identity etc.

Samuel Brooks You are assuming that effaminte men are restricted to gay men. I can only talk from my own experience obviously. All my gay friends you would never guess they were gay unless you asked them as they would abswer yes. They are what some would call "straight acting", I use quotes as I don't like the term as it implies dishonesty. On the opposite side the campest or most effeminate men I have met are straight. Most happilly married and have kids. They are just so comfortable in who they are that they don't feel the need to live up to the stereotype of a straight bloke.

You know it fella,lol.I've woken up in bed with black eyes,bust nose,split lips & bruised ribs,but I've always woken up in my own bed! Yeah she was,& d'ya know,she rarely,if ever, talked about the war years.Nor did dad really,he was born in 1928.Weirdly,she married dad after she'd been engaged to his older brother who's ship was sunk during the war! I've seen any number of documentaries about it all but not done exstensive research into it.One phrase my mam DID use a lot was,"You lot don't know you're born".My sister's been researching our 'Oirish' roots for a while now.Tho' I've no idea how far she's got.

You don’t have to say your not gay before stating you like someone’s music. Anyone can appreciate anyone’s music or talent etc. Like saying I like a female artist eg Madonna and quantifying it by saying: I’m not straight but I like Like A Virgin. I don’t give a care what someone does or believes as long as it doesn’t have a detrimental affect on anyone but I like a great tune.
