I always took this video is she is playing the ghost (if you will) and he is in mourning... you can see it because he hears her in the plaza and looks around trying to find her... he's walking through is normal life & his bandmates are giving him space, while Amy's feel never touch the ground. She's also portrayed in a whiteish, heavenly light.

This song was written by the bands co- founder Ben Moody ( the guy at the piano ) when he was 17. Ben wrote it after his grandfather passed away. Such a heartfelt song .

First, this is a tremendous song! Truly epic! Their name is pronounced as two separate words Evan / Escence (ess since). Their entire first album is incredible and Amy Lee their lead singer has to this day one of the most haunting voices ever. Some other really great tracks by them Bring me to Life and My Last Breath are worth hearing first IMO.

In this case, she is actually the one who has passed away and he is unable to let go and move on; therefore she is stuck too and unable to fully cross over to the other side. If you noticed, she is always above the ground. And he is walking in the same places she is seen in. The bandages or “binds” represent how she is bound by his inability to move on. A beautiful piece for sure. Oh; they are pronounced “Evan-Essence”

Imagine her words are his thoughts too. She is dead. Bandages, feet never on the ground, etc. "haunting" the places he goes. Her beautiful, angel voice is playing in his head, maybe a last conversation or argument. He feels her everywhere. She also cannot escape what she was trying to escape with death. They both feel the loss and the "unfinished" end of the relationship.

FYI...In the video Amy is the ghost...so to speak..if you really pay attention to it.. she never touches the ground and she has bandages wrapped around her wrists still and is in ALL white.. plus nobody pays attention to her like she isn't there and her friend who was at the piano is still in a black suit.... but yes she did lose her little sister to an unknown illness and her brother who had cerebral palsy I think it was later in life... she did make a couple of songs for her sister who was 3yrs old and I believe Amy was -6-7 at the time...

My personal take on this song is a mother having lost her child..I know it's not the typical take, but that's just where my mind goes when listening to it.

The story at the time was that she and one of the band members broke up, to the point that he walked off stage in the middle of the performance of this song the first time they did it on stage. Whether it's true or not, it was partially about feeling like a ghost because he was still there and they had been together for a while. Because he was in the band, he was still there and it unsettled both of them. Because they had to keep it together to work, neither had time to heal.
