However its faster to say "February 16th 2012" than it is to say "The 16th of February 2012". Also its just cleaner when incrementing days "2/16, 2/17, 2/18" vs "16/2, 17/2, 18/2" its just much better the US way.

Actually the "American" system is the British Imperial measurement system, it's just that the British upgraded to metric and America continues to use the superceded, British, Imperial system. Look it up. You know, a foot was the length of the King's foot, advanced stuff like that.
@madman2u
@madman2u 5 жыл бұрын
+Hemanth Swarna *It* really doesn't because it's not logical. The only way it makes sense to you is because you've learned the set measurements. Generally speaking a foot is not a set measurement since feet come in different sizes. It'd be the same as having measurements in trees and define a tree as 10 meters tall even though trees comes in many different sizes. It's completely arbitrary just like the imperial system.

Hemanth Swarna what sense of relativity are you talking about? feet? i'm supposed to look at someone and imagining in my head how many steps i would take on them to cover them face to toe? and even then, its not about my foot's length but a dead king's one, so i would still be off. No, i dont get it, it still makes zero sense.

Did you know water freezes and boils at different pressure levels? Even the supposedly more precise metric system makes a simple common sense call in the way temperature is measured. if you wanted to be precise you would have to say 100 degrees celsius is the boiling point for water _at sea level_

Very late answer. There is nothing to understand, with such vast cultural differences it´s practically impossible to agree on almost anything collectively. Americans aren´t on a railroad track, they are on a bumpy highway with thousands of signs wanting each individual to go in a different direction. The big issue you are facing now is the adversarial mentality which mr. Trump unfortunately seems to be fueling, on top of that your very opinionated news media isn´t helping.

Comedians always tell talk show hosts what to ask them to be able to launch into their bit. The US is literally one of only two countries in the world that hasn't adopted the metric system. For a country with lagging math abilities it is quite puzzling why we still insist on a system where 'there are 12 inches in a foot, there are 3 feet in a yard, there are 1760 yards in a mile' instead of the simpler 'there are 1000 millimeters in a meter, there are 1000 meters in a kilometer.'

And what you call "military time"? We never write am/pm, 18:00 is six in the afternoon. Obviously... Do average americans not get that at all? I remember one guy not understanding what I meant and I was surprised he admitted it since its not hard to figure out even if youre not used to it.
