Benitez was one of the most gifted fighters of all-time, being the youngest champ ever at 17 years old. This was a guy that quite often didn't even bother to train before fights and STILL won. Unfortunately for him this fight he ran into someone who was near the same level of natural talent AND put the work in at the gym. It's scary to think how good Benitez could have been if he had put the work in that Leonard, Hagler, or Hearns did.

MJ Johnson while I love Leonard you are wrong, the most famous example is his namesake, sugar ray Robinson, widely considered by boxing to be pound for pound the best fighter of all time. He was welterweight champion 1946-1951 an 5 time middleweight champion. He had a win streak that extended through his first 40 fights, 29 failed to go the distance many were ranked in the top ten. He fought at a frenetic pace and took all comers fighting sometimes twice a week. In 1941 he fought an amazing 20 times, including 2 fights in august 2 days apart. Ray Robinson record was an amazing 74-1 before they would give him a title fight. He fought the best of his times at a most furious pace. Respectfully As much as I love sugar ray Leonard and watched the fights you spoke of, I cannot agree with you and I'm sure the great ray Leonard wouldn't put himself on the same level as his hero and namesake sugar ray Robinson, the sweet science of boxing 😊

I feel like no one here seems to realize we're in a god damn time travel right here! This is the fight that happened one day, way back in our time and Tyson was watching this while it was happening, he had about 13 years old and inspired him to be who he is! This is actually incredible

I remember watching this fight when it was live, freaking intense all the way to the end. I thought Ray was ahead in points but not by much and Benitez was champ but in those days you had to beat the champ pretty convincingly to get the title. Its just the way it was. Sugar Ray put em away though with an exclamation point. Nothing like those old 15 round fights, nothing even close to it.

Wilfred Benítez the best defensive boxer all time. Two year later may 1981. Benítez won super welter 154 pound. CMB. And Leonard won 154 pound AMB title. And Benítez say want remach with Leonard in 154 pound. And Leonard say not fight with Benítez in 154 pound. And Leonard quit AMB title 154 pound. Down to 147 again to fight with Hearn in sept. 1981. Leonard decline fight with Benítez again.

what, 5 seconds left and they stop the fight. today Benitez would have got a standing 8 count and fight would conclude as a decision . he definitely lost, but i feel bad for Wilfredo. he can never tell people he went the distance with one of the greatest fighters of all time. also Benitez didn't go to the body enough, but maybe he was never a body puncher with that upright stance of his.

Tyson is a few years older than me. This fight right here made me a boxing fan in 1979. It was on regular TV. ABC I think. I watched it from the Bronx, no ppv, just an antenna in Co-Op City at my Grandparents apartment. Sugar Ray Leonard is my all time favorite, but Hagler, Duran, Hearns, Holmes, Salvador Sanchez, Aaron Pryor, man, there were so many greats and they fought one another and everyone could watch. Boxing was great back then and its still one of the ways I exercise 40 years later. Best thing about shadowboxing is I never get hit back. Hope the sweet science has a resurgance.

Benitez needed this loss to show that it takes more than incredible natural talent to stay at the top in the boxing game. Had he trained for that Leonard fight as diligently as he did for his later match against Hearns, would've been a true 50/50 outcome for once. Even with his infamous rep for not putting in the max work for most of his big fights, still have him ranked solidly at No. 5 alongside Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, and Duran during that period. He really was that good during his peak years and defensively was second-to-NONE in that era...when he did put the work in, that is.
