While promoting their film Ladies in Lavender in 2005, the great Dames gave an interview to Leonard Lopate.
Part 2: • MAGGIE SMITH & JUDI DE...
A new DVD entitled Maggie Smith at the BBC has recently been released, which sounds great. Unfortunately the release seems to have been marred by idiocies: 1.) It's not available in the UK (even though Maggie is British) and 2.) It omits the BBC productions of Lily in Love and Memento Mori, in which is contained one of Maggie's "funniest performances" according to her biographer. Insane.

This is one of my "favourite films" of all time. Judi Dench and Maggie Smith are marvelous together. Their friendship and the way that they interact together is amazing-just like finishing each other sentences. The scenes in Cornwall, UK are wonderful. That is where my great-grandparents came from-haven't been there yet! I have to watch this film at least once a year!

Maggie ain't in that pic, it's Virginia Redgrave. But ain't it odd they share a similar-ish face? Glenn Close, too, and Katherine Hepburn.

I love them both! First, Maggie and her funny movies like Sister Act. Then I finally saw movies with Judi. Her TV show As Time Goes By is excellent.

Do yourself a huge favour and watch The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, if you haven't done so. It is a tremendous, brave and jaw-dropping performance. A no holds barred monster that she imbues with dangerous charisma and real, ultimately disturbing, humanity. As a contrast - the warmth and wit she brings to the Agatha Christie mystery, Death Under The Sun, is pure entertainment. I was lucky enough to see her on stage a couple of times. Hands down the most exciting actress I ever saw. God she was good.

You are so right about this interviewer being "rubbish." he is one of those sanctimonious, self-righteous "guys" from radio PRI, and therefore typically mannered and precious...

Interviewers (Katie Couric is another) who talk too much and actually put words into the interviewee’s mouths, effectively answer for them, leave responses such as “yes.” the only thing left to say. Good interviewers know how to ask in such a way as to draw out the subject’s answers, opinions, etc…so that the subjects voice is heard far more often than the host's.
@Knappa22
@Knappa22 16 жыл бұрын
Lovely listening to Maggie and Judi; the interviewer is rubbish though. Instead of latching onto their answers, and getting them to expand their responses he moves onto a totally different question all the time. The interview doesn't flow very well.
@nickbigd

This critique is demonstrably false. As when in the discussion of directors, he latched on to something Dench says and follows up with “Do you like that better?” Many other examples.
