One thing I noticed recently in the narrative is that Gohan is figuratively and quite literally fighting his dad. Cell is comprised of Goku's cells, Saiyan urge of battle, the very thing Gohan is against. Goku is always pushing Gohan to become stronger and to fight in situations he doesnt want to. Cell proceeds to push Gohan until he snaps. Gohan is fighting what Goku wants him to do, and what Cell is reinforcing.
