I’m 5’ 4” 190 lb guy. I did BJJ for 4 years quit for 18 years, came back late 2019 ish. I have been doing strictly no gi 3-4 times a week for the last 2 years now. I’m a mid level blue belt. Recently my professor started paring me with this 3-4 striped white belt, 51 year old 6’ 5”265 lb guy. He is on the edge of blue belt. What an experience and exceptional opportunity to get my technique on point. If I don’t do the technique, just about perfect, I pay for it and fast….

@@flowerswerewarpaint646 I’m a (1) striped blue belt, I got that strip in February of 2021. I was unbelievably fortunate, not knowing it at the time. Carlos Machado handed me my blue belt in May of 2002, he is a legit OG. I trained as a mediocre blue belt for about a year, got injured in front of my girlfriend, later becoming my wife. I quit because of a bad shoulder separation. My entire life was falling apart about 3 years ago. My marriage, business, health were in the tank and I said screw it I would rather die on the mat than my bed. Today everything has turned around. My marriage is just about repaired, business is close to being sold, and I dropped 40 lbs and got jacked. Relatively speaking. I’m the healthiest I have ever been. I am 5’ 4” 185lbs and getting lean. My professor told me 2 months ago I’m up for promotion and he has been testing me and testing me, with a variety of partners, particularly this big dude. I might get stripped up, and potentially my purple at the next promotion. I’m super stoked.

Brock is an absolute beast 😂 Biggest challenge is difficult to pin right now,being so dang new to bjj, but I'll say that I have a lot of trouble rolling with bigger partners when they get me in side control. I have trouble escaping, and often revert to relying on strength, which opens me up for a submission or another bad situation 🤙

My biggest challenge is the 15 years of neglecting my health. I started jiu jitsu Oct 2021 and have made huge improvements, but there's so far to go. I know it's a marathon, just sucks dealing with a bunch of constant small injuries. My gym is amazing though with support and team focused which is the only way I've kept after it.
@dravenwag2 жыл бұрын
I've been doing it 6 years now and I get injured pretty consistently still! But the more I consistently go, the less I get injured because my body gets more used to the physicalness and the more I'm able to feel when I'm about to get injured, and tap or not exert as much effort into doing something that might hurt me. keep going!! It gets easier

My biggest problems in general are flexibility, gas tank, and remembering the details necessary to finish a submission Also I just recently realized that one of my favorite side control positions only works on people smaller than me. What side control position?
@MannyMuskets2 жыл бұрын
@@NoBody-ro3xj My head is pointed to their feet, usually because they have a strong straight arm frame keeping me away.. I use my arm closest arm to control their hips by pinching their whole waist in a shotgun grip, my closest knee is on/by their shoulder to prevent them from turning in to me and I'm using my opposite foot as a base to push against them (think 90-90 hip stretch position).. My biggest struggle is timing and putting it all together. I have been training BJJ+MMA for about a year, and MMA for 6 months previously. I am usually training with people that have been training longer than me, and I am doing better; lasting longer, escaping more, getting smashed less. I also try to be offensive, but usually by the time I see an opportunity and go for it, my partner is 1 step ahead of me and defending already, or worse has baited me.

For me, the biggest challenge was getting my blue belt… For a while I wanted it so much that I couldn’t even enjoy the training anymore, the only thing I cared about was getting the belt. However, once I got it, I experienced a sort of relief, and since then I found myself enjoying BJJ more than ever. Whoever says belts don’t matter is lying. They do when you’re a white belt. No one wants to walk around with a sign that says “beginner”.

@honeyhole4112 жыл бұрын
@@tylerlowdell6032 to be honest I didn’t have an issue with the white belt itself. After about 1.5 years in my coach wanted to promote me and he made sure I knew it, but I moved to another country, where I needed to wait for another year to get my belt, even though I was already hanging out with the blue belts. I remember, it felt like injustice at the time. I think if coaches - are consistent with the striping - are clear about what they expect from you, and - promote based on technical ability the white belt journey can be quite an enjoyable one. Unfortunately mine wasn’t.
@tylerlowdell60322 жыл бұрын
@@honeyhole411 yeah I’ve been a white belt for a long time probably about 6-7 years if you include the 2-3 years off at various times for injury and covid and I’d quite happily just stay a white belt forever 😂

@@honeyhole411 well said. That is clearly for financial reasons... the gyms know it’s the most important one for an intermediate beginner students pride. It is an injustice, that’s why Gracie gyms have an exam for blue belt.

Not a BJJ guy, but my biggest difficulty in catch wrestling and ringen (historical German wrestling) has been being the smallest guy. I'm 5'10" 140 pounds, and I'm the most experienced, but I need it when some of my partners outweigh me by 100 pounds. There are some times where I feel like my weight is distributed perfectly, and I just get swept like I'm nothing haha. But it's a great experience, because that makes you really know when you've straddled someone twice your size in mount that you're doing a lot right.

Necromancing here, but I was having the same problem as a 35 year old guy with a lot of muskuloskeletal damage from 15 years of Soldiering rolling with 18 and 19 year olds. I simply couldn't move as fast as them. I asked my Coach about it, and he said "You don't need to move as fast as them. Slow them down or make them take you with them with your grips." Then he showed me how, and it made all the difference. I will grab a tight sleeve grip and roll it knuckle-down to anchor it, and a same-side collar grip nice and tight. They are hard to strip, and strong enough that if they try to pull away I go with them. It really slows them down a lot. The other go to that I like a lot is going two-on-one with a sleeve grip and pinning their hand to the matt, using it as a pivot point to spin around to their back or flank on the same side. That's my "Slow-Guy Jiu Jitsu"
