David Bowie was one of the few white performers to appear on Soul Train. He did Fame, and he also did Golden Years, during his Funk period. This was back in the day when Bowie was wasted all the time, and hanging out with John Lennon.

This was co-written by John Lennon. He also sings backup and plays rhythm guitar on the track. He and Bowie met up in Los Angeles in 1974 during Lennon's "Lost Weekend" year when Yoko banished him to the West Coast to get his act together.

@@suz5862 Hello...Yes....You are right... ...I read that Lennon...came up with the word...'Aim'....and Bowie changed it to 'Fame'....supposedly Lennon helped on a couple other lyrics.....but ...yes....The majority of the song was written by Bowie. ..and guitarist Carlos Alomar. ...But...Lennon did help out singing background vocals on the track. ...which sounded very cool.

When I was in fifth grade, my mom bought me this 45 record, because I begged her to. My class played records during lunch hour. I gave them this record to play. Half way through the song, all the kids in my class asked my teacher to take it off because they didn't like it. After that, the only black kid in my class asked me for the song and the artist. He wanted to buy it. He was huge and very popular, so I felt a little vindication... 😁😁😁

John Lennon wrote or co-wrote three US number ones within a few months in 1974-75: 'Whatever Gets You Thru The Night', Elton John's version of 'Lucy In The Sky' (on which Lennon played and sang backup vocals), and 'Fame' by Bowie.

BTW, David was a trendsetter, one of the first to do glam rock in the early 70s! You need to see him in this era. His persona of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The song is Moon age Daydream from the movie, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. There's footage of it on KZbin

I was watching a Bowie interview with Conan O'Brien here on KZbin and he said that Bowie was among the 25 richest in the UK. I found it amazing when you think that there was the royal family and all these diamond miners in Africa and profiteers and other monarchs. Another Bowie song that I like is DJ and the way he has to make fun of them, as you say he is very versatile but Heroes is for me its biggest hit especially the long version.

David Bowie is a whole genre on his own. I knew you'd love it! Got to do more. Sound and Vision (from his album Low. Nick Lowe was good friend and did a response EP called Bowi and had a song called I Love The Sound Of Breaking Glass. Speaking of Nick Lowe, do Cruel To Be Kind. It's Power Pop perfection. Nick was a New Wave pioneer btw) Young Americans China Girl (written for Iggy Pop) The Jean Genie Under Pressure (with Queen) Modern Love Golden Years So many more.... You won't be sorry!

@mozilla2576 Whichever way the influence went they were both great artists and great artists are usually receptive to good music whatever the source...cross-pollination often has great results. Most of the music we listen to, particularly the 20th century forms are perfect examples of that. Given James Brown's long and influential career, David Bowie must have been listening and learning..."what goes around, comes around"...
