The director of the movie, Sam Firstenberg, was recently interviewed by Viking Samurai. He shared his thoughts on this movie and working with David Bradley. He talks about how the studio completely re-edited the movie after it was done without his knowledge. That's why it seems so all over the place. Well worth watching.

@@JasonBrantIt always bugged me that in the last fight you can see that each of them is actually fighting someone they previously fought, which is why it looks like they aren't in the same room. The fight was meant to be that one move (and then the thrown sword), likely an homage to the Kurosawa films Seven Samurai and Sanjuro, and the most famous fight of real 17th century swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, but the studio must have insisted they needed a bigger fight and added the silly reused shots. There is an unrated cut here on YT by the way. I don't think that cut was ever released in the US. It isn't marked as Unrated on the ones I see on youtube now, but the running time is 1:26:19 and if you check it at 1:10:13 you can see if it is the unrated by the extended ending to the fight there. I won't describe it because I think they blocked my last comment from 9 months ago because of it.

Conan would die or the pole arm guy would die then in the next scene the main character would be delivering exposition while the dead guys were training in the background. Pure masterpiece of filmmaking! Edit: the tv version didn't have the predator vision scene that over stayed its welcome from what I remember, but it was definitely On one of the vhs I rented. @@JasonBrant OG ending was that it was supposed to be a much quicker to the point fight, as it would realistically be between two masters. But the studio for whatever got involved and wanted more added to it. The movie was also supposed to be more mystery, where you didn't realize the samurais were brothers at first. It would slowly be revealed as the movie went. Also the "love Scene" was not the two actors as it was a studio request to add it in after the filming stopped.

Fun review as always! The issue with framing is due to the fact that your screening copy is cropped to 1.33:1, whereas this movie was filmed in 35mm and originally released in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio (as with all Firstenberg movies). So, sadly, the cropping is affecting the perceived editing and framing/composition of the fight sequences...

Just out of curiosity: the music on "Only The Strong" says "paranauê, paranauê paraná". In the Tupi language (of the Brazilian natives), paraná means “like the sea” and “auê” is a kind of greeting. The expression “paranauê” can be attributed to a person who has mastered the art of capoeira, as if he made the movements equal to the movements of the sea.

If you look closely, you can see that the beginning of the "fight" between Bradley and Dacascos's characters (Bradley's "vision" before he actually draws the sword) is recycled footage from their earlier fights. You can see Bradley's clothes are different, and catch glimpses of other weapons. As someone mentioned, the studio did their own edit of the movie. So, I think someone thought that the original finale was not exciting enough and they had the footage spliced in, and tried to make it look like Bradley was having a vision.

You can't help but notice that there was a certain era in action movies, where a fighter would deal a fatal blow and then not look at his opponent collapse, but rather keep his arm/melee weapon stretched, screaming and staring the other way. In response to the guy with the red cloth (or plume?) on his chain.. there is a reason for that. Supposedly (and Im not 100% certain on this), the quick moving red plum is supposed to throw off an opponents guess on where the weapon it's attached to will reach or where it will hit. I know this was kind of used with certain spears as well. Because it's so eye catching the thought behind it would be that the opponent will try and dodge the red blot, and in doing so might misread where the actual weapon is. Of course, this is just something I heard/read a long time ago so I have no clue how accurate this is, but it does make some sense to me at least

In anticipation of you guys watching this, I watched it for the first time in years this afternoon. I think it’s great. The story is ridiculous, the acting is questionable, but it’s still more believable than Bloodsport. 😂 The fight choreography is way better too. Frank Dux did the choreography on Bloodsport and it looks like it was done by someone who’s never even seen a real fight, never mind been in one. 😂 This film also has great gore. I’m quite shocked and amazed that my mum let me rent this multiple times when I was like 10 years old. But I had already seen the terminator, predator, the running man, and robocop by that point too. 😂

The beer moment was great. It may be cheap, but Cannon knew what they were doing: bring back second-act underground fighting rings! Also, the red cloth/tassles at the end of the knife-whip is a Chinese kung fu thing. Same reason you see it on the ends of swords and spears. The flash of red is used to blind or disorient the opponent. With chain whip, it also makes a sick-ass sound when you are flailing and twirling it, as well as provided some air resistance to allow greater control.

This was clearly a gift whose possession was accepted by Brian. The wet pants are his own fault.
