China's navy is now the largest and most modern in the world as asserted by the Pentagon early this year. The PLAN is hardly going to be treading lightly with Beijing pumping out new frigates, destroyers, and cruisers at a much greater rate than anyone else. China’s new cruisers and destroyers also represent enormous technological leaps, dramatically closing the gap with Western navies. Case in point, China's Type 055 13,000 tonne heavy destroyer carries more armaments than any other destroyer class in the world while integrating a range of revolutionary features from dual band radars to a radar cross section reducing stealth profile. Type 055’s capabilities equate to the most capable multi-role surface combatant currently at sea of any nation. Classified as a “Cruiser “by the USN with the same firepower as a 38-year-old Ticonderoga class cruiser with 112 vertical launch cells. The third carrier in the PLAN fleet and the first in a new generation of "flat top" US style carriers got its feet wet nine days ago in Shanghai. Named after the eastern coastal province of Fujian. “TYPE 003” is 35,000 tonnes larger than the Prince of Wales. 100,000 tonner, as is the USN Gerald R Ford. Three electromagnetic catapults can launch every 45 seconds. Each three-second launch can consume as much as one hundred million watts of electricity. Same, same, the Ford class. Conventional power. Next door is a TYPE 004, due for launch three and a half years. 100,000 tonne super carrier, nuclear powered as will be the 005 and 006. Emulating the USN, the PLAN is focussed on deploying a large fleet of nuclear attack and ballistic missiles subs. Still a long way to go to catch up with Uncle Sam with just twelve nuclear boats but new generation ballistic missile subs on track to be commissioned in 30 months will have significant upgrades in fire power. Sixteen ballistic missiles, up from twelve, with each missile armed with three independently guided nukes. That translates to the ability to deliver forty-eight nukes. The new missile, the JL-3, has been tested three times and will be the most advanced Chinese submarine-launched long-range missile ever deployed, putting the PLAN within striking distance of the continental United States according to an American military report.

Interesting to see the two Mk. 42 5"/54 cal. gun mounts; I didn't think they were still in use anymore. @@rat_king- I know what they are fella, but they are still 20,000tn carriers who can operate at least a sqdn of F35b on them, possibly even two, it’s not that much smaller than the Cavour. So yes, they DO count, go and ask the Chinese how they feel about two Cavour size DDH being converted to handle sqdns of F35b. Oh they do count, they count very much indeed

@@majorclanger8997 Well, if they go to sea with 2 sqdns on each one that = 48 F35, not many countries in the world can boast that. They would have more at sea 6th gen than the French would. Yes, they are DDH’s, but the whole point of a multirole ship is simply that, be multirole. Now a QE can accommodate 55+ F35 and then rotary wing too, but that ship is 3x the mass. The Japanese can field two Izumo and have a very potent at sea deterrent.
