My favorite thing was going back and forth and watching the different reactions after that particular joke. Selena Gomez looks like she wants to slide under the table and die. Emma Stone looks disgusted. Harrison Ford looks over at his wife, who is facepalming. A black woman is picking at her food with the most bored face. A white lady in glasses looks like she's asleep. Most of them have no reaction whatsoever.

Let this be a lesson for people who don't act like themselves. You will do something regretful. This performance was clearly unlike JoKoy. He already has a strong fanbase, so he didn't need to bend to the liking of others. Ricky Gervais is proof of that.

He should have played with being in awe of his audience like his mom/ a typical filipino would… make jokes about how fanatic Filipinos would be roasting him right now. The audience for the most part acts like they are too fucking big to be to roasted by a aspiring Filipino comedian. You can tell they were holding their laughs. Comedy is a difficult task in acting especially if you are in a room of "made"people. Yes the script didn't had its punch but there's a lot of comedians who gave poor jokes before and they still got their laughs simply because they were seen as "superior". This audience is so tight wad.

Ricky Gervais had the advantage of really being in the Hollywood circle (and having the time to develop material and not giving a f*ck). Jo, on the other hand, shouldn’t have taken the gig - his style of jokes was to make fun of himself, his son, and his mother. Being inexperienced with hosting, he probably said yes thinking it was like winging it as a stand up and an opportunity to branch out/represent Asians. BUT he doesn’t have enough experience in that world and know enough people in the audience to crack Gervais-level jokes. This is probably the first time he’s had to work with writers where he does not have the final say in the material that gets used. Add to that the fact that it usually takes months to test material in smaller audiences before bringing it to a stadium. I feel bad for him. Hopefully he’ll be able to shake it off and use it as material for his future Netflix specials.

Good god, I never felt more second hand embarrassment from just listening to how forced the laughter was. Awful script, if it was scripted, and if it was improv then next time just stick with a script that’s been written and edited by actual women.
