^THIS. The [Hollywood] audience just weren't Jo's kind of audience. The reason for his shot in popularity is because his material is something that the average/common man can relate to. In the case of the Golden Globes, these are elite/elitist high-brow crowd whose lifestyle is something that Jo really has little to no experience of or isn't familiar of (despite him now being a multimillionaire), so of course his jokes and punchlines aren't going to land like Ricky Gervais', who not only has already hung out with a good number of Hollywood celebrities but also has lived their life for quite a long time.

It’s the science of language.. one of the most slept on sciences because politicians do it to build themselves or things they’re talking about up. But comedians do it in almost the exact opposite way in that they break down situations of our culture and every day life and it’s for pure joy (laughs) when done the right way. Truly lucky to have the art of comedy in America

It wasn't his best night and this crowd didn't know him so there's that added critical eye. I'm glad comedians are backing him and he was panicked when the jokes weren't hitting. I believe him when he says he'll make it right with the writers. The problem with these shows is there's so many rules for the TV network and for GG. It's a hard for a comedian like him to be himself. Schulz would be great in this setting plus all the comedians have a lot of notes of what to do and what not to do when their chance comes up. Hopefully whoever hosts next year will be given more than 10 days!

It's not just Ricky Gervais. Tina Fey and Amy Pohler did three years in a row and killed it every year. Then Gervais did it for 4 or 5 times and destroyed. There was continuity for like a decade where Golden Globes opening bits were the hottest thing in Hollywood awards nights. J Koy didn't continue that, so it seemed especially disruptive. He did admit he was bombing. Throwing his writers under the bus is tasteless, but I kinda understand why Jokoy did so. When we’re embarrassed, we tend to blame other people at that moment but then regrets doing it later on. With only 10 days preparation, I reckon Jokoy halfheartedly accepted the jokes written for him because he had no time to come up with new ones that suit his style. I’m pretty sure he felt bad about the blaming.

When comedians clearly get agitated at the audience for not laughing, and begin throwing their writers under the treads to save their own ass? They've lost my respect. Jo Koy should have stayed on daytime morning shows - playing with the female host's feet...no seriously, he did that on multiple shows, it's the only reason I remembered him before this.

It's ironic that comedians always say actors are self absorbed. Comedians are the most self absorbed. Dave Chapelle has said that all great comedians are selfish assholes, its rare to meet a kind one. God forbid another comedian criticizes another comedian, they get defensive & upset. Eddie Murphy, Andrew Schultz, Louis CK, Richard Pryor etc have instances of them attacking new comedians or firing back at older comedians who dont like their comedy. Actors & comedians are opposite sides of the same coin, maybe that's why they can't get along, too similar like looking in a mirror

It's also the fact that they have to usually work very hard to come up with GOOD original material and if they're getting thousands of people giving them very positive feedback in every city they go to, their brain is naturally going to get defensive when someone criticizes their work because from their perspective, their approval rating is through the roof. Takes a lot of humility and self-awareness to cut through that.

The joke bombed in real time. No need to make excuses by blaming the audience (who didn't laugh) and the target of the joke (who just sipped her wine). It's ok.....sometime jokes don't hit. You'd think a comedian would be the first to tell you that but instead it took Schulz 19 mins to make every excuse in the book because he just didn't want to admit the obvious. It would take Kat Williams 5 secs to explain the same situation.

Intention/expectations are everything in a situation like this - that's what Shultz is saying. Ricky is coming from a place of "I don't care" and clearly and verbally projects that. Although, make no mistake, he DOES care about being funny. What he doesn't care about is if they get offended. And on the other hand, Jo Koy came up as he had something to lose (which he totally didn't - he's literally one of the biggest comedians working right now), and when this expectation wasn't met... it makes it look like he bombed, when really his jokes were perfectly in line with other jokes that other comedians have done on that stage. And he was nervous.

I think Jo Koy did fine. In fact I think he took it easy on them except he did make a major mistake. You never apologize for jokes as a comedian which he seemingly did in some interviews after the Globes, you never apologize, that is the first rule of being a comedian. And to all the naysayers, Who tf cares about the people complaining AND it's totally ok if the audience didn't always laugh. This is not a typical standup gig. This was a roast of the celebs there and Hollywood all together, Ricky Gervais, who is heralded as the best Globes host in the modern era by the public, was a absolute Boss and unapologetic as he made personal jokes towards the celebs at the Globes and Hollywood during his 5 times hosting. . Go back and look at his Globe monologues on YT, the way Tom Hanks, or Robert Downey Jr reacted and many others. They did Exact expression Taylor swift did for Jo Koy. SO WHAT??? Taylor Swift is on the cusp of overexposure. Maybe after the football season is over, she will take a break. I support her, she seems like a really sweet young lady and it must be hell to have cameras follow you everywhere you go but not to have a place to live, or having a terminal illness is worse. Jo should not have apologized or blamed the other writers. These jobs are being shunned more and more by the best comics. I mean, the possibility of getting slapped and/or misunderstood OR canceled is probably not worth the money. The only reason I watched was to see Jo. We need comedians. I know who a lot of comedians are because when I'm feeling down I go looking for a laugh. From Matt Rife to Dave Chappelle, we need all of our comedians.

The other guy had nothin left to make the audience laugh because they already laughed at it. Any further jokes is just old news. When Andrew roasts people at a show, we don't know anything about them, so when he says something like "why is this brotha covering his face, you know you the side chick, right?" The throwing the writer under the bus, I see it more of an improvised moment and that line itself being a joke. But if it was truly throwing the writer under the bus it’s fucked up but I don’t think it was. The people in the room’s ego couldn’t handle the jokes. Koy delivered great jokes but the People in the room made it seem like it was so bad.
