Joan Crawford and Ann Blyth in Mildred Pierce (1945) “Director Michael Curtiz had a reputation for being very, very difficult. It didn’t take me long to find out how difficult. He took one look at me and snarled, ‘You and your damn shoulder pads,’ reached out in fury and ripped my dress from neck to hemline. Then he stared at me in shocked amazement. The shoulders were still there; they were real. I burst into tears and he strode off set in total embarrassment. We got along pretty well after that.” - Joan Crawford from My Way of Life

Cute story, but pretty silly. Joan got to wear the biggest shoulder pads of her life in "Mildred Pierce," even in her fur coat!

@@akrenwinklein a later interview she noted the dress he ripped was one she bought from Sears. They would reconcile hence the shoulder pads in the film.

I never understand why she thought she's not a great actress. I think she's incredibly talented, natural, and modern.

The Slapster strikes again. This time, Anne Blyth gets it, in 'Mildred Pierce.' Delicious.
