my most unhinged job interview - the man who swore it wasn't a sales position, but a "display" position. Nope. It was a vacuum cleaner door-to-door sales. And he got nasty at me when I asked him flat-out why he lied. The most frightening was a "management" position that turned out to be a pyramid scheme and they *wouldn't let me leave the room* until I'd listened to their over-cheery pitch for over an hour. Looked them up and the company was on several watchlists.

Sorta reminds me of a phone sales job I applied for years ago. I pretty much said to the interviewer, with a bit of jovial tone _"I'm happy to sell to people who need and want the product, but I don't want to be cold calling little old ladies."_ They looked at me like I'd grown a second head. And asked _"What are you doing here then?"_ I replied honestly, _"I don't know. Thanks for your time."_ Shook hands, left and a few months later they got shut down for being a barely legal scam.

Of course they aren't, the job's going to require at least some time working outside in whatever kinda shit weather Mother Nature throws at you, carrying stuff around in an industrial environment that's not designed for people with disabilities so they're going to filter those people out right off the hop. There's no point in wasting everyone's time interviewing someone in a wheelchair if the job involves expanded steel stairs or ladders.
@sorcerousfang
@sorcerousfang 9 күн бұрын
I think jobs should list what expectations they have for the physical aspects of their positions, though. I don't think listing the physical expectations is wrong (though I'm sure there are employers that use that nefariously). I'd rather know up front that they want me lifting boxes, because that's not something I can do easily, and it means I can either bring it up to see how they approach it or just not apply. My teaching position listed basic physical requirements, which included being able to lift around 50lbs because supplies and small children (if needed), as well as being on our feet a lot. Other people help me lift boxes and I have a rolling chair to scoot around the room on, provided by the school. Some of those listed requirements are just them covering themselves.
@irina-ty1336
@irina-ty1336 9 күн бұрын
Well, it may be discriminatory, but it also may be because it's a physical job that disabled people can't do. You don't see lot of disabled people in construction work, and that's not discrimination, that is just they don't fit the requirements to do the job.
@jakobrosenqvist4691
@jakobrosenqvist4691 9 күн бұрын
It really depends on what thje job is, some disabilites will prevent you from doing some jobs, that's just how it is. It's not like we can ban all jobs that can't be done by disabled people. But at the same time it's important not to discriminate agianst disabled people if the job would be suitable for diasbled people. There is a big difference between a hiking guide position in the himalayas or a office job where the ownder just doesn't want to build a ramp to the door.

The only job I ever quit was as a maid in a small family owned hotel. When I started, the head maid was planing to retire in 9 months and the other employees (3 of them) were not interested in the job. So I learned all of the duties from the head maid as well as learning the cleaning work and when she retired I applied for the position with her recommendation. The owner gave the job to her 18 year old niece who was barely literate enough to fill out the laundry forms, had never cleaned a room in here life and spent most of her time on her phone. I was then asked to train her. F*ck off. I quit.

I worked in restaurants a lot. One thing I learned is if they're willing to hire you quickly, the place sucks. One place I was hired, all the men got paid nearly twice what I did, for doing the exact same job. I had a tantrum after a waitress had lost a ticket and demanded I make it IMMEDIATELY in the middle of dinner rush, and got fired. Meanwhile, previously, one of the men walked off the job completely, they had me come in, and he was back the next day like nothing happened. Couple weeks later, he got drunk, beat his girlfriend, ended up in jail, the boss BAILED HIM OUT, and he was back to work.

Second best was being told that it's sometimes possible to make more money applying for jobs and then reporting the companies for the illegal questions in their interviews than you can make working for them.

Dunno if it's better or worse but here's a kinda funny story about the life span of a certain computer program I can't remember the name of: For the tacked-on computer course in my community college program, we had to learn a software that had already become redundant when the school year started. Obsolete. Dead. No longer available. It was functionally useless and we had to complete our homework before each class ended because the software was off the market and could no longer be installed on our home computers. Failing to complete the computer course meant also failing the course we were actually paying to be taught. Why did we have to learn how to use this obsolete software? Because it had been added to our curriculum when the people who signed up for that course all dropped out, but the teacher was still under contract. We were in the welding program. 😝

Well see, the problem is that the company is motivated by money...which means they'd like to give *less* of it to the employees, and when you've got someone who 'loves their job' they're often willing to take less pay and still do all the work. All these illegal questions that employers feel emboldened to ask because it's been an environment where everyone is desperate for a job for so long they think the rules no longer apply. I actually had a full hour and a half long lesson in one of my college courses (communications class for an accounting degree) that was completely about inappropriate and illegal questions, and what to do if they're asked. The main thing was 'thank the interviewer for their time and tell them you're no longer interested in the position, then report them', but if you're really desperate for the job there were ways of dodging or politely reminding the interviewer that that's not an allowed question. The professor actually had us pair up and switch pairs to do several 'practice' interviews each, some as the interviewer and some as the interviewee. We were supposed to slip illegal questions into the interviews to give each other practice at dealing with them. I was astonished how many of the people I interviewed answered the questions we had just spent half an hour learning were illegal and should not be answered. I didn't even make them sneaky questions, I went straight for the examples we had been given...are you pregnant or looking to become pregnant, what's your marital status, what religion are you...and most of the people answered these questions like they'd forgotten everything we just learned. It's no wonder some employers think they can get away with this shit. That was over ten years ago, mind you, so the job market looked quite different. People were still generally willing to debase themselves for an opportunity, back when there was still hope that all one's financial goals were actually attainable if one simply worked hard enough.

Def experiencing the issue of new hires getting paid more than people already hired. I'm a "star employee", have been for 2 years, do more than one job and yet they can't give me a raise because they changed the pay rate after I was hired and couldn't grandfather me in to it. Finally getting offered a promotion and when I tell my boss it depends on the pay, she basically says I need to be flexible. I interviewed for a Christmas position at a supermarket in 2020. I arrived earlier than the scheduled time in case of traffic troubles, but the interviewer apparently forgot that she had me down for an interview, so it was another half-hour before the interview actually took place. Great start. I answered her questions as thoroughly and with as much life in my voice as possible, but when it came to my asking her questions, her answers were short and her tone was very flat. Trying to gauge her experience, I asked if this particular branch was the only one she'd worked at, and she snapped "you're not meant to be asking questions about me". This left me reeling, and I stuttered out the next question (can't remember which one). During the interview, I asked if there was a possibility that this job would lead to a permanent position; she responded with "No. I'll tell you that now." My final question, just to end on a lighter, slightly informal note, was "If you were a biscuit [(cookie, sort of)], what biscuit would you be and why?". She gave me a type of biscuit, again, really abruptly, and there was an awkward pause before I said "and that's all the questions I have!". Interview ended, I quickly got out of there, burst into tears on the bus home, and can safely say that it is the only time in my years of interviewing that the interviewer has successfully made me feel like shit as a person. Hint to future interviewers: do not fucking do that.

maybe it's not as unhinged as the stories in the video, but my most bizarre interview experience was back in college. basically, my uni hosted a career fair for their graduating students, and so, i asked around if the companies accept HR hirings. only one company communicated back so i took the opportunity. their call time was 10am. upon arriving, i saw 50 other candidates一nothing unusual. what was unusual was they started the interviews around 12 noon, and there was only 1 interviewer for all applicants, and after the interview, they held us back until everyone was finished. i got interviewed around 4pm, then, the interviewer was confused when i told him i applied for HR. he consulted with his coworkers for a moment and told me that i was mistaken and they never hired for HR. i explained to them that during the career fair, i asked if they had HR hirings, and they said yes. but instead of apologizing and letting me leave, they kept me, gave me a salary contract for a clerk job, and i waited like everyone else until every applicant was finished一which was past 8pm, because after the interviews, the recruitment team held a long-ass meeting to introduce the company. when me and the rest of the applicants were at the building's lobby, all of us had this agreement to ghost the company. in my opinion as someone who studied and trained for hr, their hr sucked ass.

I hate retail recruiters the most because they have these personality tests... it doesn't matter how many references you have, what job experiences you have, etc... all it comes down to is that blimming personality test where you're told to be honest... but apparently not THAT honest. (And all the options are awful too, because it's usually a multiple choice test...) Also, I love how employers always look for "enthusiastic people with a passion for the job", then wonder why they can't really find someone to fit their expectations, because it's a minimum wage job that is stressful as heck and it isn't possible to be *constantly* passionate and enthusiastic for it, no matter how much you might otherwise find the job to be okay if it wasn't expected of you to basically abandon your human side for the sake of being constantly enthusiastic and passionate. It's also one of the most off-putting things on a job ad, only being beaten by "we are a family" and "we are looking for the right person for the job, so put this magical hat on you and wait to be sorted into a house before we decide whether you're a Hufflepuff or a Rejected". Yup, the whole HIRING (but not actually) is so annoying. Also, the (frustratingly) funny thing is that there is no one "native English" accent. I got a rejection story that changed my perspective a bit. The position was giving tours in an exhibition about fossils. "Ideally, the candidate should have a bachelor either in museology or paleontology". This seemed ideal, since I have a master's degree in BOTH. The rejection said "unfortunately, your qualifications don't match our requirements, we are looking for someone more qualified". I got it like 10 min after applying. It was my 70th rejection (yeah not much employment in museums) and I was really feeling like shit, thinking I couldn't write a cover letter, didn't sell myself right etc. When I got this one, I realized that quite some people don't actually read applications. Later on, I learnt that in another place they published a job offer after having already created the job for a specific person -just to make it look like it wasn't nepotism. Anyways, a few years after that I landed what was advertised as my dream job, hated every minute of it with burning passion and quit to be a freelancer.

I have exaggerated quite a bit on my resume. If I didn't do that to show my real skills I would have probably never gotten a job in IT. The reason most job requirements in the states state that the candidate must be able to sit/stand/walk/carry/crawl/etc (although not usually the see/hear part) is because that way they can discriminate against disabled folks, which keeps their insurance premiums down. It's one of the big reasons (besides micromanagement) that bosses wanted people to return to the office rather than working remote. If someone's in their own home, you can't require them to be able to do certain things like this.
@MrGrumblier
@MrGrumblier 8 күн бұрын
No, it is because the job requires you to be able to do those things. If the position is to work in a lumber yard loading trailers or trucks, how useful do you thing a paraplegic would be? If the job is to answer the phone and respond to customer inquiries, how good a job do you think a deaf person would do? If the job is to transcribe handwritten notes on a computer, I don't think a blind person would be a good fit. If the job was for a carpet installer, do you think a person who cannot bend, squat or kneel would be a suitable candidate? It is not discriminatory, it is to ensure people applying know what will be required of them.

This video made me relive the 1,5 year trauma of trying to change my hateful job. 1,5 years of denial, frustration, hopelessness, feeling of injustice and gradually believing that I'm a worthless, unskilled loser. Fuck that I was doing online courses to upgrade my resume, fuck all my goals, aspirations, initiative, and eagerness to work hard... I seriously started looking for jobs in February 2023, already having a bachelor's degree, long months of struggling and going to dumb interviews and doing their stupid tests, then in October I started a long-planned post-diploma. I saw a job posting in late January or February 2024, I applied, they got back in late March, I had to wait till June to schedule an interview. June 30 2024 I got a positive response. Now, a week has passed since I started the job and signed the contract. Thankfully, it's a good job that matches my qualifications and interests so I'm happy, but I wouldn't to say that all the effort, time, tears, lost hair, stress, sleepless nights, and exhaustion (physical and mental) was ok and normal, nor do I think that now I should kiss my employer's feet for ending my despair.

I've worked for several call centers in my 20s, and multiple times was told by different recruiters that the reason their client chose Idaho was because we have the most neutral accent in the US. It is so bland that no one can pinpoint where we're from, which makes it easy for people from all over the US to understand us, where it might be harder for someone from say, Vermont to understand someone who has a heavy creole or deeply southern accent. We don't have region-specific phrases or euphemisms so we don't confuse people from different parts of the US. It's the least-identifiable accent here in the States.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but as someone who has experienced being majorly depressed and suicidal from a young age from all sorts of trauma; It’s okay to not do anything. You are not wasting your life as long as you are happy. There are things that must be done as requirements for the world we live in today, but just remember that you don’t have to be perfect, you don’t have to be the next Einstein.. it may feel like there’s a lot of pressure, but there’s not. You can enjoy simple things like escorting bumblebees out of the walkway, taking a deep breath of the ocean breeze or the smell of rain in a thunderstorm. The saying about stopping to smell the roses feels so overused nowadays that sometimes it feels like it’s lost meaning, but it really is great for your health to find small things to take joy in, and think about the complexities of all the little lives on earth and the impact that everything has on everything else. It’s truly beautiful. ❤

I've always loved it when you covered this sub. I quit my job back in February, started searching in Late May/Early June, ended up accidentally working at a scam company that resulted in the closure of two of my bank accounts, and finally got a job yesterday, albeit a temp one (which already pays more than my previous job, even with training). Job searching is painful. Companies put out these ridiculous requirements and do BS interviews then wonder why no one wants to work/apply for jobs anymore. To anyone job-hunting right now, good luck. To anyone who is in a crappy job and wants to get out, get all your ducks in a row and be prepared for a hard time, and good luck. To those who landed wonderful, or at the very least non-crappy jobs, I'm really happy for you, and I hope it lasts ❤

Looking for work recently has been rough due to being disabled and crazy HR hiring practices too. I was even asked to do an assessment interview with an AI! Which I failed because I wouldn't let a customer live in my house?! Or I wouldn't let a customer that broke into the store after hours mop the floor when they asked?! "The customer is always right you need to work on your customer service skills" the AI told me. In what world would either thing be appropriate things to ask and how would those EVER be the correct answers? I don't even want to work for a place that makes you interview with an AI. Bonus goes to being on my FIFTH interview with a big box retail store, for a normal cashier or greeter position. At least the other big box stores just made me take useless psych eval tests and only have one or two interviews. Whoever is teaching recruitment and HR in modern times really needs a swift kick in the nethers and to be re-taught themselves. It's pure absurdity now.

7:56 It literally says showed up in searches. If someone looks up 5 years experience or whatever and they're at the bottom of the list, never to be seen, it would still count

If headhunted for a job and they ask why you want to work there or if you'd be a good fit, tell them 'you came to me, why do YOU think I'd be a good fit?'

Just a quick reminder for everyone wondering why, when companies make a dumb decision. A company will never make the smart decision, or the wise decision, but only the decision that nets them the most profit RIGHT NOW. Sometimes companies make "smart decisions", but not because they're smart only because it gives them more short term growth.

Or because someone high enough to impact the decision ran a mid- to long-term cost-benefit-analysis and realised that the quick buck would cost them _a lot_ in the long run.
