But something went wrong on the way to the screen. The Mummy was a financial failure, poorly received by critics and movie-goers alike. The Dark Universe was dead on arrival. SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

The biggest problem with this was that Tom Cruise made it more like "Mummy Impossible" The flick has flashes of Brilliance, but I see why it didn't quite work. The should have kicked off the Dark Universe with something else that wasn't still fresh in people's minds, like Frankenstein or Black Lagoon.

Naming it The Mummy was the biggest marketing blunder possible. That name already belongs to a beloved movie/franchise, and we were all turned off by the perceived insult to it. Simply changing the name to Curse of The Mummy would have garnered much more good will and enthusiasm

That is 1/2 the reason and people didn't want Tom Cruise in it because of The Baggage he came with if that had gotten somebody else than The Mummy would've done well, because those people who wanted Universal to bring back Brendan Fraser didn't mind Disney and Columbia having Tom Holland as Spider-Man and they hardly said bring back either Andrew Garfield or Tobey Maguire. I am not surprised that Tom Cruise wrecked The Mummy because he even destroyed Stanley Kubrick's last film Eyes Wide Shut according to R. Lee Ermey in an interview.

The Dark Universe didn't start with The Mummy (2017). It started with The Wolfman (2010), which was critically panned. So rebooted again with Dracula Untold (2014), another dud. The Mummy (2017) was, in fact, the third attempt at starting the Dark Universe franchise.

I believe it and you want to know why, because Tom Cruise has done this before. According to R. Lee Ermey in an interview from 2006 it was Stanley Kubrick's last film Eyes Wide Shut which Tommy Boy wrecked with his ego. There was no need to get him since The Mummy was going to be female and why have a movie centered around a Circus Midget who is now over 60 when they could've gone for somebody like Sam Worthington or Justin Long both who happen to be close to age with Annabelle Wallis.

Say what you want, i really enjoyed The Mummy reboot with TC. I saw the film years after its release, it was already forgotten by then but i still remembered the echoes of the not so overwhelming reviews. I watched the movie just because it was simply an option on one of the streaming services and boredom. I was pleassantly surprised. I even recommended it to all my friends and anyone who would listen. I guess people expected something really different than what they got. I liked the more mature approach. If you be honest withoutself, The Mummy(1999) is a kids movie. Its not bad but its a kids movie. TC reboot is a little older audience. Thats the main difference. I also liked the effect and the ideas. Those two eyed four pupils was INSANE. Loved it.

I think the biggest problem is that people were turned off by Tom Cruise’s character as he is usually seen as the action hero (obviously). His character was unlikable and because of that you weren’t interested in what would happen to him. If they changed the script to him being an archeologist/treasure hunter, The girl as an ex-military with connections still in the military it might have been more fun. Also Tom Hardy not being Dr J also did not help because THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN INSANELY GREAT!!

The problem is really quite simple - the studio had a slate of classic -- what's the word -- right "horror" movies -- but felt compelled to remake them as big budget action/adventure movies. What would they have done if they had a slate of classic rom-coms? Turned them into big budget action/adventure movies? What if they'd decided to update/remake a bunch of classic musicals -- would they have turned them into big budget action adventure movies? Or classic comedies? Or classic gangster movies? Would they have opted to turn all of them into big budget action/adventure movies? And yet over and over, the studios, when they look to update/remake horror movies -- the mummy, Dracula, Frankenstein -- they go down the same stupid route -- transform the monster into a romantic hero (if possible) and turn the movie into a big budget action/adventure movie -- and then watch, confused and surprised, over and over and over, as the movies tank.

Sounds like Tom cruise would actually be a pretty decent director if he stepped up to the plate since he seemed more sure of himself as a director of a blockbuster than the director they hired.

I think if I wanted to do my own Dark Universe this is how I would do it. First I’d call it the Universal Monster Universe instead of the Dark Universe. This is who I’d want to cast in my entire Universal Monster Universe. 1. Ben Affleck as Frankenstein Monster. 2. Henry Cavill as Doctor Frankenstein. 3. Ana De Armas as Bride of Frankenstein. 4. Glenn Powell as Son of Frankenstein 5. Elisha Cuthbert as the Invisible Woman. 6. Gal Gadot as the Mummy 7. Bill Skarsgard as Dracula 8. Patrick Dempsey as the Invisible Man & some more I’m not gonna continue.

Let me first get it out of the way: Mummy reboot is palatable and okay IF and ONLY IF you forget any Mummy movie you've ever seen and heard of any of the other Mummy films or ideas and if you don't connect it to the Universe. I would have loved a monster universe, regardless of the idea that the concept had passed. My biggest problem is the miscasting and script. I love Annabelle Wallis, though not in this film AT ALL. I like Sofia a LOT but meh as a Mummy villainess. However, the biggest travesty is allowing Cruise to step anywhere near this. He killed this film for me. I just can't get past him because I cannot stand looking at his face (I want to punch it). I would take Crowe's worst ham day over one minute of Cruise. He makes the story (while fantasy universe) completely unbelievable and is just a vanity project (like every other film he is in). Brendan Fraser was delightful; Arnold Vosloo divine. Rachel Weisz and John Hannah adorable. Patricia Velasquez perfect. We all know the legend of Boris Karloff. So this is just horrible.

I agree with you because there was no need to get him being how Sofia Boutella who is a woman would've made The Mummy okay and it should've been about her just as Dracula Untold was about Luke Evans. That Circus Midget ruined The Mummy with his ego which didn't surprise me because this wasn't the 1st time he has done this, according to R. Lee Eremy in an interview from 2006 it was Stanley Kubrick's last film Eyes Wide Shut which that Circus Midget Tom Cruise destroyed with his ego which was why Tim Burton didn't want him as Edward Scissorhands because Tommy Boy wanted the character to be a Buff Macho Manly Stud instead of a Shy Timid Emo Goth as Johnny Depp portrayed him as. I would've gone for either Sam Worthington who Universal wanted as Dracula back when Dracula Untold was called Dracula: Year Zero or Justin Long who is very underrated but very loveable as Nick Morton, because any one of those 2 would've been better than that Circus Midget and they would've had great chemistry with Annabelle Wallis being how they are close to age with her and chemistry was why Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz did so well together, whereas Tommy Boy is old enough to be Wallis' father being how she was just 1 when he was in Legend with Tim Curry and Top Gun with Val Kilmer.

Why The Mummy and Dark Universe failed, because Alex Kurtzman like an idiot didn't want Dracula Untold as THE 1st film for The Franchise and I heard that originally Luke Evans was going to be in The Dark Universe version of Van Helsing with Channing Tatum which I will talk about later in this comment. The Mummy failed because they went for world building instead of having the story set in Egypt, they had it in Iraq and England. Also, the main reason why The Mummy failed is because of Tom Cruise, Tom Cruise was THE Problem because he changed the script from Horror into Action as well as made it all about him when Sofia Boutella was THE Real Star, but I am not surprised by that for The Mummy wasn't the 1st film that was destroyed by that Circus Midget's ego, according to R. Lee Eremy in an interview from 2006 it was Stanley Kubrick's last film Eyes Wide Shut which Tom Cruise destroyed with his ego. There were other choices to go for other than a Circus Midget who was pushing but is now over 60. If I was Universal, I would've gone for actors who are either underrated, up & coming, and hardly known, not to mention born between 1976 to 1984 making them close to age with Annabelle Wallis who was born in 1984 and chemistry was why Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz did so well because they are close to age whereas Tom Cruise is old enough to be Wallis' father being how she was 1 when he was in Legend with Tim Curry and Top Gun with Val Kilmer. The actors I have picked that would've made a great Nick Morton are throughout The United States such as New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, Cleveland, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Denver, Cincinatti, Orland, Miami, and more as well as coming from England, Canada, Mexico, France, Spain, Brazil, Germany, Jamaica, Russia, Ireland, Cuba, Kenya, Zimbabwe, India, Thailand, South Korea, China, Japan, and more, here are my picks which are 60 actors that would've had great chemistry with Annabelle Wallis and also I would have kept Jake Johnson but add Damon Wayans Jr. for comic relief in The Mummy. 01. Jason Ritter 02. Jensen Ackles 03. Jared Padalecki 04. Paulo Costanzo 05. Diego Luna 06. Joseph Gordon-Levitt 07. Scott Kid Cudi Mescudi 08. Matthew Lawrence 09. Rider Strong 10. Justin Long 11. Texas Battle 12. Mehcad Brooks 13. Edi Gathegi 14. Cam Gigandet 15. Donald Glover 16. Paul James 17. Eric Balfour 18. Sam Worthington 19. Steven Yeun 20. Wilmer Valderrama 21. Zhu Yuchen 22. Takumi Saito 23. Ben Foster 24. Ryan Gosling 25. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo 26. Zachary Quinto 27. Mick Cain 28. Eric Jungmann 29. Topher Grace 30. Elijah Wood 31. Darius Love 32. Eric Ty Hodges 33. Matthew Carey 34. Lee Majdoub 35. Andrew Lachey 36. Nicolas Duvauchelle 37. Jesse Metcalfe 38. Nick Stahl 39. Bruno Gagliasso 40. Andres Gertrudix 41. Damon Lipari 42. William Levy 43. Eoin Macken 44. Sunkrish Bala 45. Vishal Malhotra 46. Nick Cannon 47. Charlie Hunnam 48. Tongayi Chirisa 49. Worrawech Danuwong 50. Sam Riley 51. Gang Dong-Won 52. Yuri Kolokolnikov 53. Brandon Jay McLaren 54. Alfonso Herrera 55. Max Rhyser 56. Lyriq Bent 57. Sullivan Stapleton 58. Amin Joseph 59. Jonathan Jackson 60. Lee Joon-Gi Those 60 actors are the ones who would've been great with Annabelle Wallis, now as for Van Helsing from what I have heard was going to have Van Helsing as part of Jekyll's group Prodigium but had a falling out with him, so he went at it alone in a RV hunting monsters and Van Helsing who would be portrayed by Channing Taum would've worked with Luke Evans' Dracula who killed his family to face off against Elizabeth Bathory. That idea if I was working on it needs some revamping, instead of Bathory being against Dracula she can be a loyal minion to Dracula and instead of Van Helsing hunting alone he can form his own group called The Monster Force as a homage to the 1994 Saturday Morning Cartoon that came out alongside with Season 2 of Exo Squad. I would also go for somebody else other than Channing Tatum as Van Helsing because he doesn't fit The Mold to be Van Helsing and I like Channing Tatum because he reminds me of Brendan Fraser, but that role needs to go to somebody philosophical such as Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Sean Bean, Ioan Gruffudd, Christoph Waltz, Adrian Paul, Christopher Lambert, Viggo Mortensen, Ethan Hawke, or Cary Elwes as Van Helsing leading The Monster Force which has Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Dai Xiangyu, Garikayi Mutambirwa, Eiza Gonzalez, Jessica Lucas, Monique Candelaria, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Ayaka Komatsu as his hunters, but yes give me your thoughts about these ideas.

I'm a big fan of the original Mummy movie with Boris Karloff. For me, the Mummy is best of Universal monsters. The Tom Cruise Mummy movie is unwatchable. Cruise is miscast, the humor doesn't work and it felt like a Mission Impossible movie with a Mummy. Universal's belief it could launch its classic monsters as cinematic universe like Marvel was ludicrous.

The problem here is that it became a Tom Cruise movie. What i mean by that is if you look at major stars, there are movies which are catered to them and the Tom Cruise vehicle started with Top Gun. Parts of that formula is present here
