If this is accurate, and he was again inprisoned, the UK had a funny way of rewarding it's war hero's, like also Alan Turing...
@robertdraper57825 ай бұрын
It's not quite an accurate portrayal, the real person Gus March Phillips was awarded the DSO for the operation but was KIA in 1942, it was better for the storyline to see him punished by the establishment rather than what actually happened. . As for Alan Turing he and the others from Bletchley Park were subject to the Official Secrets Act, many of the decoders never spoke about their work and took it to the grave, not through fear of prosecution but through a sense of honour, Turing deserved better but homosexuality was still illegal and the courts didn't know about his massive contribution, Turing didn't use it as a defence but even if he had I doubt it would have helped, we were a narrow minded lot back then.

The SOE with the SBS, Force 133 and the Adriatic Yacht Squadron did have some odd characters and do some exceptional things: Kidnapping General Kreipe was perhaps the most high profile. The story of one of the wars' odd-balls, Brigadier Calvert, is a sad one though.

I've not seen the movie but the book was awesome. The exasperating thing was learning of the internal squabbles that plagued the efforts to fight the Germans. Senior level commanders battling for control of the program and many attempting to outright squash it because they wanted their own power mongering or felt that type of war wasn't proper.

Terrible rendition of what actually happened. There was no beautiful woman. The assignment was, indeed, to steal the ship. In fact, the assignment was to steal three ships, which they did. They were not placed in the brig upon rendezvous with the British ships in international waters. The agents were very quietly hailed as heroes upon their eventual return to England, not subjected to a tribunal. They did not disobey orders; they were following them. The actual events were action packed on their own. Why muck it up with fiction?
