It's a basic human instinct to scare off predators so we feel bigger than we are by making a loud sound, as well as comfort yourself as vocalising loud yells is a basic human trait in calling for help/attention. It's why he yelled "hello?" into the cave too, announcing his presence to predators and potential humans alike. Animals in the wild can be intimidated by loud sound and confident posture, act like a predator and they will fear you, act like prey they will hunt you down.

I grew up in South America as a kid near a tropical beach. There was always an abundance of seafood and coconuts. My Mom and grandmother would cook the fish, crab, and shrimp in coconut milk. The taste was absolutely scrumptious 😋 Tom was lucky to be on this island 🏝 instead of a cold barren island 🥶 Great movie! 👍

You'd be surprised, I used to go barefoot outside constantly. One day I was walking around the house and kept feeling like one of my daughter's beads was stuck to the bottom of my foot, but it wouldn't shake off. I lifted my foot to see what it was, and I had stepped on a tack, and it was completely poked all the way into my foot. There was no pain, and I had been walking on it lol. I basically had leather soles on the bottom of my feet.

You know, one thing that has always struck me is that almost every island has palm trees. They're a source of coconuts, which are filled with fresh water, sustenance and even the white flesh can be used as a sunscreen and antibiotic. Seems weird that those would be growing out there with really no purpose, until a human comes along.

maybe if you were sent and got set up with tools and supplies. the only things you could eat are fish and coconuts. and you have to get them yourself, every day. you also would need to be adept at starting fires. and most things you make will deteriorate after some time and you’ll need to make replacements. shoes, clothes, tools, it would be a harsh and demanding existence compared to the abundance and ease that we enjoy in society. also humans are social animals and the loneliness would be nice at first but we survive by working together, division of labor and collaboration with a community of people is what assured human dominance over nature. lone wolves don’t survive long.

@@RichWeigelthat’s not necessarily true. not everyone would try and kill each other like in lord of the flies. humans are social and collaborative, and have problem solving and adaptation skills. that’s how humans became the top of the food chain. we are biologically predisposed to working together to solve problems. if there were others on the island it would make things easier to divide tasks and labor and more people means you can get more done than you can alone. they would all have the common desire to return home and having others there in the same situation as you would provide support and hope to each other compared to being completely alone and hopeless. there would be little benefit in killing each other in petty squabbles. and cannibalism likely wouldn’t be a concern if they can reliably catch fish and harvest coconuts, compared to being stuck at sea or in some barren place. they would form a sort of tribe, that is humans natural instinct unless someone is a narcissist or anti social.

you'd have to be there constantly to make sure it's still smoldering/smoking. There's not a lot of trees on that hilltop, so you'd have to lug all that fuel up the mountain. Carrying that fuel several times a day up the mountain would expend a lot of energy. Plus you're away from the seashore and vegetation, your main sources of food. Plus being up there all day to stoke the fire means you're exposed to the elements. Rain, wind, sun, etc. The negatives outweigh the positives.

climbing up and down a mountain every day(probably several times) to keep a fire going is one of the absolute worst ways to kill all of the energy you have. and you can say he could stay up there to tend to it. but that's still all the firewood going up every day. and now you have to go down to get your food. no. stay where you can conserve your energy make a fire on the beach like he did.

Thank God he had his sight and hearing...though not a religious movie, great depiction of how God never left him and gave him what he needed. Shoes, shelter, friend, food, coconut water, knife ( shoe blade), fish, and the means to build a raft to be saved!! Gave him fire!! Though Kelly was gone, the movie ended on the premise of HOPE. GOD IS HOPE, for there is NO HOPE WITHOUT GOD.

Also the dude didn't just sit around with a bunch of four year olds there all year around, it was only done for specific parties. Anyone with common sense would know this to be true. -Tries to open coconut by throwing it at a rock -Then tries to hit it against the rock, doesn't work -Finds a nice, suitable sharp rock -Immediately makes audience facepalm when he tries to open the coconut by hitting it across the fibers instead of in between them -Hits the coconut again with a blunt flintstone, because that will surely work this time -Flint magically breaks apart and turns into a perfectly shaped tool he can use -Somehow cuts the coconut open so easily that it makes the 3 minutes of raw struggle preceding this seem very off -For some outworldly, uninmaginable reason, smashes the coconut on the rock like a fucking ape, ruining any chance he could have of drinking it. Like, what was he thinking? who does that? LOL
