This series is fantastic - incredible attention to sense of place and topography during utter chaos. I cannot stop watching these, the narrative perspective is especially engaging. Jock’s “author voice” tone during readings is particularly powerful 👏🏻

@@CHINESE_PRIDE No need to get too aggressive with Chy-NAH. They will implode under their own weight and birthrates. Importing 90% of one's "energy" and 75-80% of one's food is not strategically smart, in fact is is not even conscious.

As a dual citizen of both Canada and New Zealand, my birthplace and the country I now live in, respectively. I’m holding out hope for the resilience of Patriotism in your amazing and truly great country. I love this series on your past Civil War, and can only hope that such information will serve to remind anyone in our present day and age, of how abhorrent it is to casually suggest such a possibility again. The Sargent Kirkland story literally brought tears to my eyes, Amazing ! Thank you both for your service to your country, and by extension, to all of those around the World, who have benefited from your own personal efforts and sacrifices. I love your Great Constitutional Republic, most especially your 1st and 2nd amendments. May America Always be Great 👍 🇺🇸

I had relatives from Ohio and Illinois who fought for the Confederacy, as well as relatives from Texas who are on a memorial for fallen Union. I agree with your wiser words, I suspect you too are on the downside of the ~75 year life span. I fully understand and appreciate the calls for rebellion and revolution, one never loses that fervor. But wiser minds can learn the lessons of history and know the time is not now. The burdens we have in the US are even less than both CN and NZ, so we can only observe, plan, and prepare.

Reflecting on Kirkland and Chamberlains stories and thinking about all those lost in Fredericksburg on this Memorial Day, and of course, all of the other and the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice and have been lost in service since. Powerful stuff.

Thank you for paying tribute to the hero Sgt. Richard Kirkland. I live near his hometown of Camden where he now rests at Quaker Cemetery today. I've visited there many times. Not far from him also rests Gen. Joseph Kershaw. I'm loving this podcast series you guys are doing. Keep up the awesome work and God bless.

Jocko. My great grandfather cpl. David Applegate, 8th Kansas infantry served in the Civil War from 1864 till the end. His photo is on our living room wall. The look in his eyes in the post war photo says it all. He lived untill 1933, and is buried in McCloud, Oklahoma.

I had family shooting at each other in the battle of Fredericksburg. Those families married into each other within 20 years of the war. Our daughter is now going to UMW in Fredericksburg and our camper parked and across from the Welcome Center to the Chancellorsville battlefield off Rte. 3. There is so much history in Virginia.

Burnside didn't use the Corps organisation at Fredericksburg. He used the Grand Divisions system. Slightly smaller than a Corps but bigger than a division

The ladies following Hooker around were not groupies. We don’t call groupies hookers today. We call prostitutes hookers because that is what kind of women they are. The Union troops called them “Hooker’s Brigade.” And D.C. being an open point is valid, but Lee needed to be more focused on D.C. at all. It had no strategic value. When Lee invaded PA, it was because he could get food to feed his army, and cities like Harrisburg were strategically more important. Also, I am glad to hear them tell the story of Richard Kirkland. Modern historians have tried to say that it is not true because there is no documentation from the military on either side of it. Also, it is essential to remember that Burnside had given orders to not negotiate a truce. The Confederates tried negotiating a ceasefire to allow the Union troops to get their dead, dying, and injured off the battlefield, but Burnside would not do it.

I totally get what Jockos saying re water. Even as someone who’s never been anywhere near combat. But ironically, water is ALSO used to ferry troops thru and around fronts…such as McClellans plan to push his troops by river close to Richmond, and of course the Cumberland and Mississippi domination, which probably did as much as anything to deal off southern states and ultimately win the war

Listened through first segment , and by a few minutes into the second, grew weary. This guy isn’t providing any great and wonderful information, so I stopped listening. These would be good for a person who doesn’t know anything about the United States against the Confederacy, to get a decent foundation.
