We had an instructor pilot in Korea just like that. He was an exceptional pilot, an exceptional teacher, yet he was humble and willing to see things in another way. RIP CW4 Rich ____.

The technique called the Scientific Method is a generalization of what Jocko and Echo Charles cover here. Every position you take (called a hypothesis), and you can have more than one at once, gets continually tested against new information to see if it needs to be modified, discarded or is not yet falsified. The process requires being open to new data. Anyone that rejects new data out-of-hand is not following the Scientific Method and this is very common, especially among government-paid scientists (who are often required to support a government policy narrative even if newer data would falsify that position). Being able to test ideas is good ('iron sharpens iron'), if you are wrong then you will learn something and get better, if another is wrong they get to improve instead. This is why 'Cancel Culture' is so toxic where instead of examining positions there is an assertion of "shut up ! my position cannot be falsified" which is worse than wrong, it is actively anti-scientific in approach.

Ah, good old strawman. Facing consequences for bad behaviour is not cancel culture. Who has ever been cancelled?

@@1IGG Wow, an authoritarian online attempting to twist the discussion of Cancel Culture from being anti-scientific (which it is, it is a complete repudiation of the Scientific Method) to the incredibly evil trope of "they had that coming to them because I cannot debate them, so instead we destroyed their life". A question I have for you is, do you understand that you are evil and your neo-blaspshemy approach is the way to the dark past and not the future ? I'm guessing not, yeah?

I think it's a neurological problem more than an Intellectual Problem. People will unconsciously use the Scientific Method, if they don't perceive Fear. We might have the intellect to develop the best plans possible, but if the Perception of the environment around or inside us is of Fear, we can't think clearly and execute the plans we've made, eve if they are very well made. So, saying "I might be wrong" changes Perception, calming the Nervous System and allowing us to use think and use the Scientific Method to learn. These are my thoughts.

One of the neatest things I've come across from Elon Musk is a quote that says roughly, "Always take the position that you are, to some degree, wrong, and your goal is to be less wrong over time." Even if you're talking to someone who is far "inferior" to you on a subject, they may actually have some particular point of nuance that you've never thought of.

Jocko grappling match example pretty much describes my Elden Ring experience. It’s honestly amazing how the attitude that Jocko mentioned for the grappling match can play a huge role on your success for beating the bosses in that game.

This is exactly how I approach sales calls in my business. It's just an experience, and I'm always open to learning something new from each call. (And I learn more about who my ideal client is, how to approach different people, how to position my offer, how to highlight what's most important, etc. And I learn way more from the ones who say no.) It took a while, but I've learned to not equate the outcome of the sales call with my self-worth (or the worth of my offer). I prep myself by thinking, "It's okay if they don't move forward and work with me." It lets me release the pressure of having to close them, and we end up relaxing into a conversation to genuinely connect.

On a crew- People who make decisions based on ego scare me. But when you know team decisions are being made out of a desire for a thing to be well executed based on all the facts, (and whether I or whoever received or did not receive credit for the successful outcome) at the end of the day that’s a damn good feeling!

1. assumption, assuming or balancing those to assess your perception, reset any bias is also time limited on initial discovery or tracks you lay in a conversation, debate or self drifting thought (like how to articulate an email response or annunciation). It is the self that needs to let go. I see how you are climbing steps young Jocko, there are many steps.

I think for many people, emotionalism have replaced the logic. Everything you say, they take personally. There is one problem with an open mind: people will insist on coming along and put things in it. Things, that aren't even a product of experience, rather are a set of beliefs, soaked in emotional interpretations. Emotions are fuel in the tank, not a driving wheel.
@ArmaniAT

Question. Well what about if you say you’re wrong and you keep that open mind but the other person seems to be wrong to? Are you supposed to make that decision on whether if they’re wrong or you’re wrong?

You see the black and white and it scares you. But what you see is only on canvas. Everyone has a different way of seeing things, meaning that their peripherals are different. Albeit tunnel vision, some people can only see straight and maybe a little bit around, but don't see the canvas as entirely opaque. Some others may notice the opacity in certain spots but either can't or don't want to look through them. The world may be as such how we see it. But by nature, if people can accept that they are not black and white, or may not be what they simply see, but instead, feel with all their senses, then everyone can be relatively transparent.

As an wise man once said about arguing with your wife : " when she is attacking about things that has nothing to do with the topic, take a knee, let her tire herself out because you have already won the battle. So what if you dont get laid that evening, go rub one out and enjoy the champange of victory". B.B.
