We're spoiled nowadays with anti-skip timecode technology, Phase DJ, moving platter controllers etc. because you can be as heavy handed as you want, but back then you had to have a perfect light touch to pull off those scratches which made it even harder!

I saw this entire battle on VHS back in 1990 from beginning to end and it was very clear from the early rounds that Joe Cooley and Cash Money were head and shoulders above the competition and would be facing off in the finals. Legendary DJs.

Do you still have the VHS or do you know if there was a name of the VHS? Cause if someone can find the 87 NMS Battles from different angles or higher qualities then it would make history lol

87 was definitely year of the props -- in the dmc world final, ken larsen was using some sort of hand puppet i remember... :) the first prop on video may be dj cheese's handcuffs in 86

So you remember magazines reporting on old NMS/Supermen battles? I'd love to find some to buy. The only things I've ever found were tiny little paragraphs/photos mentioning Mixmaster Mike, 8-Ball and DJ Noize winning in '92, '93 and '94. Let me know about any other magazines that reported on the battles, so I can look for them on ebay.

Yeah, that would be great. What magazine are you talking about? I know a lot of the dance music magazines used to report on battles back in the day, but I never bought any of them because I was a straight Hip hop person.

To me the 2 DJs from back in the day (80s) who could scratch clean using props was DJ Hutchy (UK 1988) and don't kill me for this but also Chad Jackson (UK 1987)

There was an original NMS T-shirt on ebay last year. The seller was asking a ridiculous amount for it. I can't remember for sure what the amount was, but I want to say $300. If I hadn't been broke at the time, I may have bought it, and put it in a frame on my wall. I once spoke to DJ Clarke Kent on twitter, and asked him if he still had any old Supermen battle T-shirts, that I could buy, but he said he didn't.

Props to New York, the birth place of hip hop, b boying, djing, scratching...... But West coast DJs where miles ahead in scratching then the east coast DJs with an exception of a few, Jazzy Jeff, Cash Money etc. Same with Megamixes, latin rascal did shops and loops, marly mall had great sets, but the mix was basically boring. The West coast DJs took the art of mixing and scratching to a whole new level. Qbert, Z-Trip, Mixmaster Mike, DJ Rectangle, DJ Revolution, DJ shadow, The Beat Junkies, Every single DJ from AM Stereo 1580 KDAY (first station to play hip hop & rap during the day 1984) in L.A. Tony G, Julio G, M Walk, Jammin Gemini, Joe Cooley, on and on. Sorry but not sorry, West coast DJs took DJing to another solar system completely.
