Joe Dumars was, and is a real class act, and was an excellent player. There was a moment of a few years during the Bad Boys prime- IMO, he was one of the two best 2-guards in the league, at times better than Jordan, especially in the playoffs. He was voted Finals MVP in 1989. He was by far my favorite player on the Pistons; he didn't play dirty, and was one of the most skilled players in that squad. Jordan has stated on record that Dumars was his toughest defender.

@@kenneths.perlman1112 What, you think MJ was Superman, the absolute best player every single game, every single season? Why, just because he can score a bunch of points most of time? I have watched MJ from his rookie year to the very end, and especially in his first few years, there were many games he was outplayed. And one of those players that did was Dumars. There were games when Reggie Miller would just cream MJ. Bird, Magic, and Jordan, all in my all-time starting 5, were not infallible. They all had moments when they lost games and at times, they were outplayed by someone else. And those that did belonged to a small club, and Dumars was in that club

I still watch some of his highlights and am like wow the young kids today may never know how much of an impact Penny had already as a rookie and could of been. A mix of Magic and Michael to many but just a great passer, scorer from all spots, post up game. As a Knicks fan and big time Ewing fan watching that early 90's Magic were something that could of been. Oh had to add Grant Hill as well. Bird was the greatest all-around player of all time. He had the most complete package. There were guys who scored more and were more dominant than Larry Bird, but they didn't have the tool kit to beat you however they felt like it. I think it was Charles Barkley that one joke that the reason Larry Bird was not very athletic and not a great jumper was because God wanted the other players to actually have a chance.😂

I know I am maybe a little too old school, but I think playing college basketball for four years, under a great coach, at a top level program, allowed NBA players of the past to become savants of the game. It shaped the minds of the players in a way that we don't see enough of today. The NBA is simply looking for one and done, or none and done future talent and let's be honest, 19 year olds have juvenile brains that are grossly under developed. College basketball should be competitive and players should be getting a degree not just in an academic realm, but also a degree in basketball. 4 years of nuanced passing, moving without the ball, defensive foot work, screening, all the things an NBA rookie should already know how to do. But, that's often not what happens.

in my all time fantasy draft i’m picking Bird #1. besides ability to score anytime, rebound, pass, play team defense with anyone, he was far and away the best at making his team better. Celtics before Bird showed up won 29 games. Bird shows up and the team then wins 61 games. MJ individually is amazing, but Bulls when MJ went to play baseball were one bad call from ECF in ‘94 and probably beat Pacers and go to Finals without him. Celtics without Bird were nothing.

Old showtime lakers fan. Hated the 80s pistons but i just couldn't hate on Dumars. Same with DJ with the celtics. Both total pros and impeccable sportsmanship

As a dyed-in-the-wool Celtics fan, I always thought that there were a few guys on rival teams that would have been great Celts. Dumars, Doc Rivers and Maurice Cheeks are at the top of that list. Quality guys, smart players, no nonsense. Doc proved me right when he coached the Celts and hung that banner.

Bird was in the same mold of player like Lebron and Jokic and Doncic - their basketball IQ was off the charts and so were their skill-level, athleticism and the will to win. Casual fans pay too much attention to athleticism and skills and don't value enough the will to win and IQ. It's rare for players to have ALL of that as a package, maybe 1-2 players per generation and they all end up in HOF

I saw Gus and Ray Williams both play in high school for Mount Vernon. My high school upset them in the regular season but lost to them in the playoffs in 1971.
