Smoking Joe is just not appreciated enough for how great of a fighter he was and what he meant in the rivalry with Ali. Their three fights are among the most historic in boxing History.
@Exostars77-A4 жыл бұрын
Tommy Ribs - Yes, they were “great” fights, but the punishment they meted out to each other was so heavy that it was no doubt a contributory factor to brain damage and their deaths in their 6O’s and early 70’s. In Ali’s case, for his last 30-odd years he was a mere shadow of his former self. I enjoyed those fights as much as the next person ... at the time. But the time will surely come when such brutality in the name of sport must end. Few heavyweight prize fighters live to a ripe, heathy old age. Much as we “shun” what passed for sport in Roman Gladiatorial contests, so will future generations look back on the barbarity of the sport of heavyweight boxing, and shake their heads in dismay at the brutality of our “civilisation” and sporting “culture”. Other sports are increasingly bringing in measures to protect their athletes from serious head injury. The big difference between professional boxing and most other sports where serious head injury might be occasioned is that the ultimate object in boxing is to cause your opponent brain injury. That is what a “knockout” is ... and we applaud.

@shaynelahmed63235 жыл бұрын
So true. No malice on Ali's part. But do you see how this brotherly playfulness on Ali's part had Joe responding with aggression and malice? Pure ugly response by Joe, everytime. Even the pettiness and jealousy when Joe asks Ali about his suit..and how "old" it is..and the chip on his shoulder re being dressed casual. Ali again tries to reassure him in a brotherly way not to feel inadequate.. in fact.. I recall Joe was wearing this same outfit during the infamous Cossell interview, in which he again became defensive over his choice of dress.. and although Ali tried diffusing the situation.... It escalated to Joe towering over Ali, fists clenched, and Ali clinching and disabling Joe to prevent further escalation. Joe had VERY low self esteem. Sad, such a great gladiator
