Smoking Joe is just not appreciated enough for how great of a fighter he was and what he meant in the rivalry with Ali. Their three fights are among the most historic in boxing History.
@Exostars77-A
@Exostars77-A 4 жыл бұрын
Tommy Ribs - Yes, they were “great” fights, but the punishment they meted out to each other was so heavy that it was no doubt a contributory factor to brain damage and their deaths in their 6O’s and early 70’s. In Ali’s case, for his last 30-odd years he was a mere shadow of his former self. I enjoyed those fights as much as the next person ... at the time. But the time will surely come when such brutality in the name of sport must end. Few heavyweight prize fighters live to a ripe, heathy old age. Much as we “shun” what passed for sport in Roman Gladiatorial contests, so will future generations look back on the barbarity of the sport of heavyweight boxing, and shake their heads in dismay at the brutality of our “civilisation” and sporting “culture”. Other sports are increasingly bringing in measures to protect their athletes from serious head injury. The big difference between professional boxing and most other sports where serious head injury might be occasioned is that the ultimate object in boxing is to cause your opponent brain injury. That is what a “knockout” is ... and we applaud.

So true. No malice on Ali's part. But do you see how this brotherly playfulness on Ali's part had Joe responding with aggression and malice? Pure ugly response by Joe, everytime. Even the pettiness and jealousy when Joe asks Ali about his suit..and how "old" it is..and the chip on his shoulder re being dressed casual. Ali again tries to reassure him in a brotherly way not to feel inadequate.. in fact.. I recall Joe was wearing this same outfit during the infamous Cossell interview, in which he again became defensive over his choice of dress.. and although Ali tried diffusing the situation.... It escalated to Joe towering over Ali, fists clenched, and Ali clinching and disabling Joe to prevent further escalation. Joe had VERY low self esteem. Sad, such a great gladiator

I got the opportunity to meet both of these Kings when I was an amateur boxer. They were friends outside of the ring. 🇵🇷🤘🏾

D_Exiled_1 Arisen then we’re comes all story of hatred once upon time ... ? Then ? I know they were friend but once Ali made FRAZIER as oncle Tom ... and him battling for his own black community that s could have hurt Joe ... and I do recall all white were supporting joe Frazier for most of them at that time

@@kinggoodvideoofthelion2913 caucasians didnt care for Ali cuz he stood for something. He refused to fight a war that had nothing to do with Blac people. Ali walked with the muslims. Ali expressed his concern about the negative treatment his Blac people were receiving. Joe on the other hand was kissing caucasian ass. So uncle ruckus is a better term. Ali and Joe were friends outside of the ring. Cuz Ali never saw a Blac Man as an enemy.

D_Exiled_1 Arisen Joe was just a quiet guy. Just because he wasnt openly speaking about the treatment of African Americans doesn’t mean he was kissing Caucasian ass. It was just personality. Doesn’t make him less of a man.

I really dislike Philadelphia for building a statue for a make-believe character but not for their real hometown hero in boxing such as Joe Frazier.

Well, what does that tell you about Philadelphia? They rather have an imaginary white hero than a real black hero.😁
