And an honest manager, because his managers of that time took almost all his money and left him with little. And he was too naive to discover it until it was too late.

Anyone who thinks Louis couldn't handle himself in the modern era need only look at this fight. Carnera looks amazingly Klitschoesque here. If anything he looks to have lighter feet and is more aggressive in the clinches. You can see Joe taking some time figuring him out, but once he times him, damn! One right hand and he collapses a 265 pound man like a sack of flour. Very impressive how Joe maintains control and systematically destroys a hurt opponent picking his shots, rather than flailing away as most boxers do instinctively. No wonder he's considered the best finisher in HW history....

@carlmurphy2416
@carlmurphy2416 6 жыл бұрын
Why do you presume he would have knocked Marciano out? He might have won, but on all the evidence there is regarding Rocky' endurance and chin it's just stupid to pronounce that with such certainty.
@truthhitman7473
@truthhitman7473 6 жыл бұрын
Because Marciano only had a chin and endurance against LIGHT heavyweights, such as an old Archie Moore and Ezzard Charles. In fact, Moore and Joe Walcott dropped him. Prime Joe Louis would knock Marciano out or stop him because Joe would smash his face into smithereens.
@carlmurphy2416
@carlmurphy2416 6 жыл бұрын
He was outweighed in almost every fight, and was knocked down twice in 49 fight career. You can't question his chin. In the last year Louis fought he still possessed KO power, albeit diminished, yet he didn't knock Rocky down and obviously didn't knock him out. He's had his face smashed in plenty of times too and that didn't prevent him from winning. I wouldn't proclaim that Marciano would win against prime Louis but I certainly wouldn't possess the confidence to pronounce that the guy with one of the greatest chins in boxing would get knocked out.

Joe Louis sliced and diced Carnera. This was a young and upcoming Louis at the time. He knocked Carnera's bottom teeth through his upper lip in this fight, he hit him so hard, so often. Ali is known as 'The Greatest', but it may have been another story if he had to fight a 'in his prime' Joe Louis! My dad saw Louis many times and used to laugh when he saw guys like Ali, Norton, Foreman, Frazier, etc. He said Joe Louis would have beaten any of guys!
@stuartperry1047

No. He wouldn't have. Joe never fought ANYONE like Liston, Frazier, Norton, Shavers- or Foreman. Billy Conn, a light-heavyweight, almost beat him. Max Schmeling knocked him out. Braddock, Galento, Buddy Baer, and Joe Walcott put Louis on the deck. Joe was great- but the fighters Ali faced and beat were far superior to the guys Joe fought. A prime Ali beats a prime Joe.

@@larryhoward4713 Ali, Foreman, Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson and Wladimar Klitschko are my top 5 Marciano truly is great but I'd have him more inclined to be in top 15 heavyweights If you look at the facts, he wasn't fighting top notch heavyweights until he fought 37 year old Joe Louis and that was near his 40th fight After he won the title his contenders were Jersey Joe Walcott who was not a career heavyweight and I mean that as in he fought at light heavyweight as well and he was near 40 years old Archie Moore who was 41 at the tims was also a light heavyweight and he dropped Marciano Ezzard Charles was 32 and a career light heavyweight but he was a fighter that would give any heavyweight problems, he was winning his fight with Marciano until Rocky finished him Marciano retired at 32 and I would have preferred had he fought the rising Patterson which would have really showed how great he was and I do think he could have defeated him despite Patterson being 10 years younger Ali fought numerous hall of famers, most of which while he was past his prime, in his initial prime he was 29-0 with 9 defences of his title. Foreman destroyed the black Marciano which was Frazier and he destroyed the great Ken Norton in a combined 4 rounds on top of winning the title at 45 years old against a man that defeated Holyfeild who was one of the greatest fighters of all time as well. Lennox Lewis defeated every heavyweight he ever faced in an era that I consider the greatest in boxing history in terms of the heavyweight division and he was a 3 time legit heavyweight champion who fought super heavyweights. Mike Tyson is the youngest heavyweight champion of all time and unified the division by the age of 23, Mike Tyson had an impressive resume defeating Holmes, Spinks, Tucker, Berbick, Smith and Bruno and he made 9 defences of his title. Wladimar Klitschko was champion for 12 years and made 20 defences of his title, what truly cemented him as one of the best heavyweights ever in my eyes was when he fought a 28 year old undefeated Joshua and gave him a very tough fight and even knocked him despite being 41 years old himself.

Notice how no matter how many times Carnera hits the canvas he gets up swinging. The man had guts. Louis later said in an interview that Primo had an excellent accurate jab with an 85" reach he could do it moving away from you. He said he also hit like a bulldozer. Louis defeated Primo with skill and speed & he wasn't about to let this fight go much longer. Louis knew one shot from Primo could end it. Primo, by the way, has the biggest KO record in the heavyweight division to this day (89 wins) with 72 by KO. And when people say he was controlled by the mob then how did he lose to Max Baer & Joe Louis? Max was a Jew and Louis was black -- you don't think they may have interfered with that demographic in the 30s? They didn't. The boxing game was controlled by the mob -- but in the gambling, with the oddsmakers & the concessions. Primo knocked out contenders who were all championship caliber. 103 fights & 14 losses. Never carried out. He met all comers & there were many who wouldn't get in the ring with him. Check his physique and compare it to Tyson Fury. No comparison. Primo was a marble statue & he did not have a glass jaw. He got up after every Joe Louis bomb & got up after every Max Baer bomb. He just wasn't as skilled as Louis, Ali, or as clever & aggressive as Marciano. But Primo did have stamina, determination & endurance. He never gave up. And that says it all in that game. Primo was an underrated champion for sure. He fought far more durable & strong fighters than Sonny Liston did. And during Liston's championship time, he only fought 2 men: Patterson & Ali. No one else. He won both against Floyd & lost both against Ali. Sonny was a strong intimidating heavyweight but no legendary champion. Not like Ali, Foreman & Frazier. They had to fight people like Ron Lyle & Earnie Shavers & each other. And even fighters like Jerry Quarry & Joe Bugner -- think they're not tough? Look at their long records & who they defeated in the ring. Not the types of fighters Sonny engaged with.

@lastrada52 8 ай бұрын
@@ascendediam- And if Primo were fighting in the 70s and 90s what? He wouldn't be trained as well as those other fighters? Do you see how silly your statement is? By the way, many fighters of Primo's era were rock-hard men & not pansies. Let me bring something to your attention -- many modern fighters today can't even go 15 rounds that's why they scaled it back to 12. I notice that the big tough guy Tyson Fury is winded by the 3rd round many times & throws lots of telegraphing punches. You don't see someone like Primo Carnera, Joe Louis, Ali, or Rocky Marciano breathing through their mouths by the 3rd round. You say tech & timing but I'll put stamina, endurance, and determination ahead of all of that. Even the Rocky movie with the big technically conditioned Russian didn't win against Rocky's guts. That's not how fighters are built. And many fighters of that earlier era had lots of heart, guts & stamina. How does an 186 lb guy like Jack Dempsey chop down a giant like Jess Willard? Something fighters today don't display is that grit. Look at Fury, look at that clown Bob Sapp. I'd give the edge to a street fighter like Kimbo Slice before I bet on those two. Kimbo beat some of the best & he was just a tough street fighter. And before you say Mike Tyson this or Mike Tyson that...Tyson was trained by the same man who trained a young Rocky Marciano -- Cus D'Amato. Tech & timing against a clever fast man like Ali -- he'd pick them apart because they wouldn't land any punches on him of consequence. Frustration is their enemy. Just make them miss. And they will...Sonny Liston missed a lot against Cassius Clay (Ali) & he was supposed to be invincible. (This is just a debate -- I'm not arguing with you).

Joe Louis was awesome especially inside, he truly was one of the greatest HWs for me id have him in 3rd or 4th Marciano and Tyson Infront, here is why people say Louis was 37 when rock fought him well Liston was 29/20 yrs older than Ali and he fought Moore 7 yrs after rocky KOd him, rocky didn't start until his mid 20s they forget Charles, vingo, la starza, Rex Layne red Applegate Tiger Lowery, Louis also was winning and winning good up until he fought rock plus every fighter that fought rocky was never the same, people talk weight he could of fought LH but didn't dam moore came in heavier, you could not train to fight him because no one fought like him he'd hit you all over and never tire, Frazier was as fit but he only had a left hook Marciano could hurt you with both hands, seriously hurt you only 3 men survived out of 49 and chins are only so good

GREATEST There is no way ali could of taken that power and kept going! In my opinion Joe Louis is the second greates heavy weight of all time after marciano! Ali was very, very overated as a boxer, he should of fought lousie in his prime!!!

This is back in the day when refs just about would not stop a fight if the fighters could stand up. In this case Primo had to tell the ref he was done.

For a big strong man Primo was not a boxer. Poor trainers hurt his career. He had braun, reach, and mass to defeat most opponents.

Primo is actually a lot better than he is given credit for. He fought some good heavies, including Louis and Baer, and had a very respectable record.

Primo's footwork is good, considering his size. His stance, however, is too straight ang rigid. He shows some decent, basic skills, though, at least before gassing out. Louis, on his part, is as agile & quick as a feline, stalking his prey, wasting no energy till he finds the chance to launch his attack. Wonderful display of the boxing science on Joe's part

My video foreman Louis shows exactly how Joe and his era fought. In that video, does that version of Joe look like he or anybody else would land anything on people foreman fought? , he and guys from his time look like novices compared side by side to no names Foreman fought, and in no way does anyone from that era look like they would last 1 round vs. guys in the 70s-90s

Carnera kept his left glove down, and Louis kept hitting the wide open target with his right hand. You could see Carnera, after the first round, was almost looking to get hit every time Louis closed in.

@@ascendediam If Louis had the training of a way more advanced pro boxer like they existed in the '70s, Joe would have destroyed Primo, you DO know that, don't you? Large size doesn't prove anything, now OR then. Just ask Mike Tyson about that.

@@felixmadison5736 I said training, not size; you’re slow. I’m 100, right,You don’t want to admit it yet, but you know I am, and Mike fought way more advanced fighters, so quoting him makes no sense at all. Mikes style was a combo of Dempsey/jersey ontop of stuff they didn't even do, he learned from the past and fixed errors

The stupid people that think today's fighter's were better are stupid, these old black and white flicks don't do the fighter's justice, these is the fastest they can play them otherwise it would be a blurred mess, fighter's of old were far superior then today's and a lot tougher to
