There is a reason to keep working even when you make less than you might by not working. When I was a single mom, my friends all got welfare, their cars fixed free, free housing, free medial for themselves and their children and food stamps. I got a small break on my housing. I I worked and my daughter cam home to an empty house, while their kids came home to a mom who was there. There were times when I felt like caving in, but I kept thinking, "What would I be teaching my daughter?". Flash forward, my daughter is the only one of the group who has not struggled with addiction. She is the only one who not only worked when she was a single mother, but also put herself through college (Masters in Geology) while doing so. We teach our children by example. We teach them by instilling the belief that even if you stumble along the way, you pick yourself up and keep going or start over. And we should be teaching them that it's fine to take help, but only if they really need it.

My cell is an old flip phone with no extras - calls in, calls out - a true "phone" for calling needs. I still walk with my head up, but it is a rare occasion when you can make eye contact with a fellow human. My friends get frustrated with me because I don't have texting capabilities... I much rather take a minute longer to communicate by voice instead of typing back and forth. I don't think we're living differently... we're just still living. It's the rest of the world that has "unplugged" from life and society.

(Watching Hillary Clinton and John Kerry promoting mandatory preschool was the last straw for me) My husband worked his ass off, I stayed home, we cut expenses and we pulled our kids from public school. Hard, but so worth it. No regrets. Today our kids are young adults, married, homeowners, and all four agree our grandchildren will never attend public schools.
