I shared a similar experience to sturgil when I was 20. A burglar broke into our house on 2 separate weekends. The police did nothing, So I waited with a shotgun and kept all the lights off at the house every night of the week with my car parked a street over. My GF worked nights at a bar and Saturday night at around 12:45 am while in the living room I heard the window (this window wouldn’t lock) to the bedroom open up. So I stood up and grabbed the shotgun. It had a 21 inch acu-choke barrel on it. Moss berg maverick 88 12 gauge. I loaded it with the only 3 inch buckshot shells I could find at the local Walmart. He came around the corner and was a guy from the neighborhood. A guy we had hung out with many times. I chambered a shell and asked him what he was doing. He said “I’m just looking around trying to keep your house safe cuz you’ve had all these break ins...” lol. Out of anger I walked towards him and got to close, not giving him any commands. While I was going on and on about how much of a dick he was for stealing so much (rent for 2 months electronics acquired over the course of a couple years all my bud and bud smoking accessories 2 different times) I got to close. He grabbed the barrel and I pulled the trigger. The gun barely missed him (all because of the acuchoke) blew a hole in the wall behind him and we both clutched on to the weapon as if our lives depended on it (they did depend on it) my initial thought was to just keep firing until he has to let go due to heat and then turn the gun on him and kill him. But I couldn’t chamber the second round. The gun was jammed and I had no plan to break eye contact. He never tried to take the gun away only hold it away from his face. After shouting back and forth for a while I convinced him to walk with me to the front door. By the time we reached the front door he was crying and begging me not to kill him. I swore to him that I only wanted this cycle to end and that I didn’t want to kill him. I let him leave the house and I kept my word. Then I called the police and they managed to find him next door at his cousins house. My house was covered in police after this happened. Every one of them said the same thing. And after explaining this story over and over to them individually they all said “that’s a shame it didn’t work out where you could have killed him” and “it would have been one less dirtbag living off of tax money” I’m glad I didn’t kill him. He got 10 years in prison and likely served it all as this was his third offense. I found out a few weeks later that the specific shell I was forced to purchase at the Walmart was the only 3 inch shell that mossberg says not to use in a maverick 88, as it will get stuck in the ejector. I borrowed the gun from a friend because at the time I didn’t have one. It just happened to have the acuchoke barrel on it because he recently had gun duck hunting. It had a tight spread at that range. Had it have been a normal barrel I would have blown the guys head off. It was like something was there stopping me from ending this guys life at multiple levels. Anyways. You’ll never read this I’m sure but I felt the need to comment because I’m one of few people that grasp what you mean when it comes to this situation. Cheers from Texas
