I live in Zimbabwe & one night a friend's pit bull just started going crazy & ran off into the bush...we then heard the most vicious battle going on in the darkness, about 100m away from us & we couldn't figure out what was happening...by the time we found a torch & followed it into the night, it had gone eerily quiet. We searched for a bit & found his dog lying on its side covered in deep gashes, clinging to life by a thread & bleeding profusely. Without wasting any time we carried the dog straight to the truck & drove 450km in the dark to the nearest veterinarian. That beast of a dog survived with 100+ stitches & when we went back to the scene the next day we found a brute of a Warthog boar with 8inch tusks that had been absolutely mauled around its throat by this pit bull & died at the scene. To put it into context, lions struggle to bring down big warthogs singlehandedly. That dogs name was Genghis & he died recently - he was as much of a friend as his human father was to me & will be missed.

@@Mknitfit Thanks, I'm by no means an expert on pit bulls, all I know is my friend imported him from the States at a huge cost of roughly $10k. He's not a dog breeder, he just appreciated the qualities of pedigree dogs & I learnt why on that occasion. He was truly a remarkable dog, his loyalty was absolute as was his love & affection towards people he trusted. People he didn't trust & animals on the other hand had to be kept at bay. He also loved kids. If I could afford a proper pedigree pit bull with papers I'd get one in a heartbeat!

My friend has a rottweiler and a pitbull. Yrs ago when the pit was still young, they both got jumped by some coyotes. The rottweiler was fine I guess, and the young pit was missing for like 2 months. This was the middle of winter in Wisconsin. We were sure the pit was dead. But apparently he was found like 1 mile away near an area I used to live, in a hole in the ground. He survived for weeks after being attacked. Was a miracle.

I had a 110 lb american bulldog (actually all these overweight "pitt bulls" are really mostly american bulldogs not much terrier in them, but that's a different discussion). Everyone identified him as a super huge pit bull. Because I am a hiking, camping hillbilly, he has engaged mountain lions twice. One was a ferocious fight, the other, the mountain lion retreated from his fresh killl, a deer, rather than decide to engage my dog. In the fight, the mountain lion retreated and ran eventually . He was a great dog and like having a loaded shotgun with you. But he was also great with children and never aggressive with people unless some one threatened me. Yes, he could discern that. Coyotes are sly and know they can out run him, so they will track him and me in the woods. But they dare not do anything. A couple times when my bull dog had a coyote cornered they run for their life, jumping 8 feet high to escape.

Overweight Pitbulls? Are you talking about American Bullies? 🤣
@greatgambino Жыл бұрын
yes sort of. The american bull dog is the closest descendant to the original english bulldog 2 centuries ago when pit fighting was legal. It was renamed the pit bull during that time because of use in fighting. The cruel English even dropped a full grown African lioness, 250lbs +, in the pit to bet on who would win. Average weight for a male was 110lbs but could go more. After pit fighting was outlawed, these dogs were crossed with a terrier for speed and agility, ie the staffordshire pit bull terrier averaging around 50 lbs. This is the dog we call today a pit bull. It is much faster and agile than the bulldog but not as strong. But in the interest and ego of owners to have bigger and bigger dogs, more of the real bull dog/mastiff was bred into them and the terrier genes disappeared. That's how we got to today where we can have 200 lb "pit bulls". They have the bull mastiff genes in them to make their greater size. The American bull dog and the bull mastiff are from the same gene pool, the mastiff being much larger. But the true american bulldog of the type I had (there are 2 distinct breeds of these dogs) had an enormous head. (see my video of him www.bitchute.com/video/rOiZ3S5q0UW7/) First time I took him to see vet, the whole place could not believe how big his head was! But a great dog and I still miss him today. @@Phogramo

@@greatgambino I was with you for the first half, you’re wrong about ‘in the interest and ego of owners’ though. I’m from Ontario where we can’t legally own a pitbull, they even forced me to spay my female when the law came in to effect. We can own American Bullies which is why their popularity is high in my province, and as such, there are many people here who are highly educated on the lineage of the pups and how they got to be their size. I haven’t come across a single American Bully (a real one, not a mutt like Hulk) that had Bull Mastiff bred in to them. No idea where you got that idea from, but that’s not a thing in the cold north nor would your dog even be allowed to register as an American Bully in the CKC… pretty sure that goes for AKC as well…
@greatgambino Жыл бұрын
@@PhogramoI am not surprised that, given all the bizarre things that have happened in canada over the past few years, that they made owning a pit bull illegal. Now years ago they did that in a few states in the US, Colorado and Ohio among others. I don't know what happened in Colorado but pit bull owners got together and flexed their political muscle and the state rescinded it. Then they came up with all pit bull owners had to have a $100,000 insurance policy. Now that has even gone away. You know the pit bull at the turn of the 20th century was America's most popular pet? Did you know the most decorated dog in US military history was a pit bull? But the US like Canada has a short memory and discards that which it has no need for with little remorse. I don't really care what the AKC says what a dog is. They are an arbitrary group that decide when a dog type through breeding becomes special and unique if the qualities are consistent and repeatable through breeding, and most of all there is a force pushing for the identification as a separate dog breed, the AKC moves their magic wand and declares it. The american bulldog, the dogs Argentine, the bull mastiff, and many of these similar breeds all trace their roots from what is generically termed the mastiff breed. And when you want a bigger size and more muscle you lean towards the genes of the bull mastiff. It doesn't happen in one generation. It happened quite a few years ago from success trial and error breeding. For god sake if you look at them they are very similar. Now the bully is a dog that has been in bred for muscular development at the expense of speed and agility, virtually removing any trace of the terrier which was put in the bull dog in the first place to give it those characteristics of speed and agility. And where do they get they gene component from? Bigger, more muscular specific dogs in the breed that are likened to the bull mastiff. Cross breeding continually to get what I consider abnormal, the over muscular bully shouldn't even be a breed since it serves little purpose. To be determined a separate breed, it used be required that the dog type had a specific skill and ability that set it aside from the dogs, beyond merely appearance or strength. The original English bulldog ( ie today called the American bull dog) original was used for handling cattle, hunting and killing big game, and pit fighting mostly. The staffordshire terrier pit bull (which Canada made illegal) was a down sized version with the speed and agility that could run down a coyote or other types of fast vermin prey. And the reason why pit bulls were statistically considered dangerous was the bad terrier temperament that it inherited with the speed and agility. The american bull dog is more intimidating in appearance but yet still capable of average speed and tremendous endurance on a run. And still is quite peaceful and non explosive. What purpose does a bully serve other than to look menacing?

Might have been the two that you saw. When I was pig hunting one time, I had two visibly stalking me and being strange as I pulled my kill litter. I threw the pig head on the ground to get them to leave me alone and they kept following me so I put a .30-30 through the nearest one when their ears went forward and they went in to a pounce stance about twenty feet away from me (mind you a good thirty feet past the pig head). Saw maybe four others in the bush to my left take off running from what I think was a prone position. It's why I don't take shortcuts through the woods no more.
