Feel for you there, I did exactly the same in my evo 8 I just had it fully forged at a cost of 6000 then put it into 3rd rather than 5th 12,000 revs later it’s another rebuilt, worse still they rebuilt it wrong thanks to a terrible garage in Sheffield, grrr and I had to sell it with no engine 😢 all in cost me 10k with the car out of action for 6 months Tbh it actually put me off manuals

I think you can theoretically cause this on the DCT: be in automatic in third, for example, switch to manual and downshift to second only to realize the auto had downshifted to second before the switchover and you have accidentally manually shifted to first.

That sucks man. The metallic noises are bad news. Crank hub won't have anything to do with this though. Money shift will damage any engine, this will likely need an engine rebuild 😬 But you'll need to wait until the engine has been opened up to really know the extent of it. I destroyed an engine on my first proper trackday, a tuned and fairly highly modified BMW 335i. Engine seized up and was completely ruined, had to replace it. Not a pleasant experience but with trackdays and tuned engines, it's the risk we take 🫠 That experience has tuned me off aftermarket tunes but not trackdays. Would rather keep the engines stock (maybe a light tune) and focus on the handling side. Unless you're ok losing an engine it's not worth the trouble IMO.

I'd be reconsidering whatever short shift kit you have in this, even with the longer stick. I had an E21 with a BMA short shifter and while it had a satisfying bolt action feeling, there was too little travel between gates. In my current car (with a tremec tr6060) I've kept the shift linkage stock and even so I've had a couple of on-track moments where I've questioned which gate I've hit! Always a possibility but short shifters only increase the risk.

Joe you did what we call a money shift. And yes you should have done The Hub when you went up too 500BHP you definitely spun the hub but that’s the least of your problems money shifts go way beyond the question is how bad. Did a piston hit a spark plug or did you bend a valve? One good thing is there’s no actual punctures through your block. crossing our fingers here wishing you the best of luck for minimal damage. Look at it this way now you can build a more powerful, stronger engine.
@AimSucker
@AimSucker Жыл бұрын
hubs arent a huge problem on manuals, the hub issue mostly occurs on dct cars due to the torque hit on high rpm shifts. id more worried about the valves hitting the pistons at 8k?rpm or however much it was, but not due to hub failure. if the hub fails like it did on mine it showed 120408, 130104, 130e20, 130f20, 132201, 123301

If it is the crank hub don’t go straight for a new engine, I’ve just done one that spun on an n55 and it just bent all the exhaust valves, fitted new valves, lapped them in and refitted and was perfect, if you need someone to do that rather than claiming it needs a new engine/rebuild then feel free to message me, I’m quite well known for engine rebuilds etc across some of the forums, if you want to see some of the work I have done I can show you. Just found your channel today and catching up on a few of your videos about your M2C, since I also have one. It really sucks that you experienced the dreaded money shift. It will be interesting to see how much carnage there is, but regardless of whether the crank hub has spun, it wasn't the culprit. Even if you had a pinned crank hub, a money shift like this would result in valves contacting pistons and relatively similar damage to what would have happened if the crank hub failed spontaneously. I'm predicting at a minimum you are looking at replacing all the valves. There will probably more damaged valvetrain components. If none of the valve heads broke off, maybe the pistons and valve seats will be okay. If a valve head broke off, your engine will be scrap. I think the code about the high pressure pump position sensor plausibility is a indication that the crank hub has spun. Looking forward to the teardown video to see what happened. Sorry for your loss.

Here in California it is VERY common for guys with S55s replacing their crankhubs as preventative measures beforehand. Not too expensive here actually at all. I was debating between a 2021 M2 Comp or a 2023 A91 6MT. Had I gone with the F87 I already had the crankhub in my shopping cart. Sorry to hear what happened.

Fingers crossed for you Joe. Been in a similar situation with a TTRS where I melted a piston, didn’t turn out to be anywhere near as bad as I thought cost wise.

Probably bent valves possibly rods may be damaged camshaft need a whole new head rebuild. Best to get it built properly so you can add more power and maybe converted to an automatic

New crank and bearings maybe rods and you'll be back on track. Block should be good. Just shows that no matter what your skills are this can happen to anyone.

spun crank hub and bent valves. even if you got the keyed crank hub it most likely wouldn't have saved the valves

Genuinely gutted for you Joe. I know it’s easier said than done but try not to over think about it and keep positive. We are all here because you are you and one way or another it will be sorted.

The real lesson here perhaps is run your cameras always, you can always delete content. Might have paid for the rebuild having had the right footage perhaps.
