Reminder Demon's Souls almost never came out in the west because Sony hated it. Atlus needed to come in and release it over here where it grew a much bigger following, and led to the bigger Souls games that came afterwards.

Fromsoftware enjoyed working with Bandai Namco as a publisher so much that all future Dark Souls games, Armored Core games, and Elden Ring were internationally published by Bandai Namco. The biggest difference between MS buying ABK & this is that MS has shown they want to put games out on MORE platforms. Sony is still out here money-hatting 3rd party exclusives when the rest of the industry doesn't do that anymore. They're not satisfied with being on top by a wide margin, they STILL feel the need to pay companies to keep games off other platforms. And as much as Sony has been porting games to PC, it's still not ALL of them, and they're not all day & date yet. You know, the exact opposite of MS who ports ALL games to PC & releases them day & date. Hell, MS is even bringing games to Playstation & signed a contract to bring CoD to future Nintendo systems. Sony's out there acting like it's still the 90's and they need to horde as many IPs as possible on PS alone.

Sony already has a monopoly on western distribution of anime. Crunchy Roll has bought out pretty much all other competitors like Vrv (remember them) while Sony merged Crunchy Roll's biggest competitor in the west, Funimation. As for Sony owning FromSoft I'm more worried about the precedent Sony has set with the FromSoft ip they own by never putting them on PC. Imagine all future FromSoft games being excluded from the PC market just so Sony can try to siphon people out of the PC market to the Playstation market. Your point about Sony trying to control how FromSoft makes their games is also a huge problem as well tho. Kadokawa also owns Dwango, another conglomerate that owns the dev studio that made DBZ Sparking Zero, and they bought Acquire studio earlier this year which made both Octopath Travelers and Mario & Luigi brotherhood. I don't see them even giving money to Acquire to make Octopath Traveler 3 either since it's not a big hitter which is what Sony wants more than anything. Overall I do think this acquisition is more detrimental to the anime industry over the video game industry, but FromSoft getting caught up in this hurts a lot.

For example Zach Bolton is involved in like every dub I've seen in some way. With subs if you're willing to wait a bit fans who are bi-lingual will usually come out with better subs than ones officially provided.

I am worried not only that FromSoftware's games will get worse because of Sony's influence, but even if they are hands off I am worried that all their future games will be exclusive imprisoned on their platform with the only way to play future FromSoftware games outside of Sony's ecosystem is emulators like what happened with Demon's Souls and Bloodborne. Even if Sony is somehow smart enough to be hands off in FromSoftware's development and ports all their future games to PC day and date it will still be a net negative because they will still force users to link a PSN account.

If Sony gets ownership of From Software, it would probably outright kill the developer. This is like Rare going to Microsoft from Nintendo and Microsoft having no idea with what to give them to do and they just make Nuts and Bolts among other really contentious Xbox games. After having experienced Enix games outright dying in the merger with Square Soft (The king of poor decision making) I don't feel anything when this stuff happens. You just have to look to what is now available. Honestly, if something epic happens like Miyazaki goes to work with a company like Game Science, Shift Up or Start his own, that would be the best. Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding 2 will probably be his true Magnum Opus.

Sony's handling of Bloodborne and their recent weird history of fuck ups cannot spell good for Fromsoft. Honestly as someone who plays exclusively on PS5 (but hopefully will get to PC someday), i really don't see ANY single advantage,, except for Sony of course. But hey, not a dig but it could be much worse if it was Microsoft or god forbid EA/Ubisoft. Miyazaki ans his team being independent and free to implement all their weird ideas free of any imprint from major publishers is the ideal scenario. I have no idea about the rest of deal (anime, manga and other media). But speaking as a gamer, I cannot see any upside, only potential downsides. Modern gaming is a hellish landscape run by corporations and infected with the very worst of capitalism. Fromsoft is one of the only beacon of hope we have.

My biggest issue with Sony buying FromSoft is the last company they bought had to release a game no one wanted and then immediately was shut down after the failure.

If this turns out to be true then Ill humbly take it, but I think its pretty nonsensical that someone would think a successful multiplat dev or publisher would feel the need to sell / be controlled by another company for a momentary influx of capital in exchange of control of the company, unless sony is really eyeing a media group with tons of assets and maybe (maybe) theyre not all "healthy", which then makes me wonder if sony's pockets really goes that deep. Just a baseless gossip by people who fantasize about understanding the workings of corporations.

Something else to take into consideration is that Tencent owns a share of FromSoftware so I think Sony will have to negotiate with them as well.

I’m more worried about the fact that Kadokawa owns Spike Chunsoft. If Sony acquires them, say goodbye to any chances of a new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon

I don’t like this acquisition, but mostly because of the anime implications and the fact that less people will be able to experience Fromsoft games; I’m genuinely not worried about Miyazaki loosing his creative control. Sony has absolutely failed with the Bloodborn IP but the game itself is still amazing, and the demon souls remake is also great. If all Sony cares about is getting game of the year then Fromsoft is probably the best studio to leave alone, Sekiro Elden ring and potentially its dlc have all won game of the year. Even if Sony sticks its hands in Fromsoft I bout Miyazaki would put up with it, he certainly has the experience and reach to pull a Kojima, and Sony knows that. If Miyazaki left Fromsoft it would be worth significantly less and I doubt Sony wants to incentivize him to leave.

If Sony does acquire Kadokawa congrats, But 1 or 2 things will happen. Fromsoftware will either end up either being either like Bungie or worse Firewalk studios. Second I wouldn't be surprised if Hidetaka Miyazaki left Fromsoftware and started up a new studio. I'm hear to see what happens and let the laughs being.

@@Xyler94 Indies are good but they (at least atm) cannot fully replace aaa. Until I see more 3d platformers again, dev times back to 2-3 years, reduced focus on graphics and realism, the gaming industry (both aaa and indie) are not in a good place.

I think it’s really stupid to say that Sony only puts out narrative focussed “movie” games, sure in recent years that’s been their main output but it’s just not true that it’s the only games they put out, look at helldivers/the ratchet and clank games. The best recent example of this is Returnal, imo the most unique AAA game I’ve seen in years being an extremely difficult roguelike shooter with a horror elements and narrative that the player has to piece together themselves, but no one cares about those kinds of games or plays/buys them and then they cry about all of the “movie” games Sony puts out. Games like gravity rush, concrete genie, tear away are all very unique and amazing games and the reason why we don’t get them anymore is unfortunately because no one actually buys or cares about the non narrative focussed/experimental games they make. Even with astrobot being as good as it is still sold a fraction of what games like GoW or TLoU did. I just think the unfortunate that message we as gamers are telling Sony is that we don’t want things that aren’t like the “movie” games you speak of. Also these acquisitions are very bad across the board and I don’t want Sony to acquire kadokawa but thinking that Sony will force fromsoft to make more “movie” games is just idiotic and cringe worthy. They obviously see the insane critical and commercial success of fromsoft and their games, you’d have to be stupid to think they would want to change their games to “appeal to a wider audience” when they already have one of the biggest in modern gaming. My main concern with Sony having their hands in fromsoft would be forcing them to improve their games from technical and graphical standpoint because that’s something that matters a lot to Sony, and just look at the demons souls remake compared to anything fromsoft has put out in recent years, they just aren’t on the same level. I think the games actually running well and looking like modern games would be awesome but at the same time fromsoft doesn’t focus on graphical fidelity for a reason. The sheer amount of spectacle and diverse content they pack into their games is what makes them so good and it allows them to develop more games in a shorter amount of time and the strong art direction makes up for the lower fidelity graphics. I think fromsoft games taking longer to make and maybe having to switch to a new engine would be the real things to worry about with this acquisition. I don’t love Sony and I hate a lot of their business practices too and I agree that this acquisition shouldn’t happen, but most of your points about that in this video suck and the way you present them is almost even more cringeworthy than the Sony ponies you talk about in your vids.

Sony has been gobbling up anime distribution especially to English speakers. Funimation made horrible dubs with terrible customer service. They were competing with Crunchyroll until Sony bought that. Netflix being the only listening company they compete with is crazy rn. Kadokawa is the Japanese version of Warner Bros or 20th century Fox. If Sony buys that they will have a very big monopolistic control of not just anime distribution but production as well.

Not a fan of Sony, but this was always going to happen. Microsoft has acquired Activision Blizzard, Rare, Bethesda, and more. They have happily consolidated the majority of major third party AAA developers. Sony was always going follow suit. It's like advocating for General Mills to stop buying out brands after Kellogg's has been doing it for years. If Sony wants to keep their grip on market share, they need to remain competitive. We should realistically be angry at the federal agencies allowing these anti-consumer acquisitions. Either way, never been a better time to be an indie/small studio game enjoyer.

The console exclusivity is just stupid for the fromsoft community. A large part of these games multiplayer functions is sharing information through notes and bloodstains and getting quest items through invasions and co op. Sure it won’t be broken if it’s a ps exclusive but without pc and Xbox you are only increasing your chances of this massive rpg not having enough players for the average gamer to connect with anyone.
