The Sixers will be one of the most aggressive teams at the NBA trade deadline if recent reports are correct. They haven’t missed a beat since trading James Harden but there are troubling signs below the surface. This is a look at how Joel Embiid is in big trouble if Philly doesn’t play their next move right.

Comparing teams and players statistically across eras is almost pointless. But comparing teams and players across eras is not. My problem with Embiid is his free throws. He gets every call in the first quarter and then defenders are in foul trouble. The defense backs off and he gets tons of easy shots. He doesn't get those calls in the playoffs. Then, he whines and complains when he's guarded like everyone else.

@@coreyczech I watch every 76ers game. They constantly foul him because they can't guard him. 76ers' offense always changed in the playoffs and they leaned too much on an often hurt Embiid. @@Rocky-wu1lnShaq obviously had a better/more dominant career. That’s more of a product of his era and teammate’s though (at least in relation to Embiid’s). They’re basically the same size (Shaq is 7’1”, Embid is 7’0-7’1”); with Embiid only being a little lighter than prime Shaq. Embiid can space the floor, isn’t a free-throw liability, more versatile defensively, more versatile offensively, etc. Put Shaq in our modern day Era, and he doesn’t go on a three-peat, guaranteed. Put Embiid in Shaq’s Era (especially with Kobe and the Lakers), and he probably wins multiple championships. Shaq is overrated. Jokic and Embiid would fair much better across all eras, relative to Shaq,

Other than teams scoring 20 more points per game today than in 2000, they also averaged as a team close to 5 assist and 1 rebound more as well. The assist and rebounds may seem small, but star players tend to absorb a much larger impact than others on the team. Anyone who remembers watching Shaq knows how dominant he was. While his free throw percentage was piss poor, it was also during an era that Hack-a-Shaq was allowed which decreased Shaq’s overall point totals relatively significantly. In today’s era he would have had plenty more shot opportunities with less physical aggression.

The reason you gave for comparing different generations stats is flawed in my opinion. Only 5 players averaged 25+, okay so what? Teams shot like three 3 point attempts back then, big men couldn't shoot 3's or even middy's, they were elite post players though. Yeah defence might have changed but what are you saying, Players haven't evolved? Chet and Wemby are already evolving into new generation "big men" away from the Embiid and Jokic mould. So in 15 years time do we say "no Wemby/Chet cannot be better than Embiid and Jokic because Embiid and Jokic did not shoot 8 3 pointers and were big body Centers who worked in the paint."?

Three headed monster with Joel, Tobias, and Pascal... add Maxey for play making and Covington for more size. They would be so tough to defend and score in the paint on. That lineups only weakness would be perimeter defense so you better hope on a good shooting night.

The Sixers making a move this season probably hurts their chances of winning this season. Replacing chemistry and continuity with talent is not always an immediate upgrade. If they get another difference making player-learning how to integrate that player-designing new schemes to maximize the positive effect of that new player takes a LOT of time and a lot of reps. It’s hard to do that in the second half of a season. Assuming that the Sixers immediately get better by trading now is a huge assumption.

Some fun Joel Embiid playoff facts: The best team he's beaten in the playoffs is the 2022 5th seed Raptors led by Siakam and FVV He averages 22 PPG on 49.2% TS in elimination games(a 9 game sample size) In NO playoff run has he ever averaged more assists than turnovers He is the ONLY MVP in league history to never make the conference finals This year, he had the biggest PPG drop from the RS to the playoffs of any MVP winning season He turned the ball over 8 times in back to back elimination games against the Hawks in 2021 He's shot under 20% from three over his last two playoff runs He had a worse eFG% than Russell Westbrook during the 2023 playoffs With a chance to go up 3-1, Joel Embiid went 0-12 in the second half against the 5 seeded Hawks in game 4, including missing a wide open layup to take the lead He got stripped by Danilo Gallnari to seal the loss in game 7 Down 3 in game 5 of the same series with 15 seconds left, he missed BOTH free throws to seal the game All of his offensive numbers(PPG, RPG, APG, TOs, FG%, 3P%, FT%) are worse in the playoffs than in the regular season aside from FT% He has only won ONE playoff series in his career where he played in all four wins(2022 vs. Toronto) He is 0-3 in game 7s and has posted a 49% TS and 5.3 TOs a game in those 3 games He once got swept in a series despite averaging FIFTEEN free throws per game(2020 vs. Boston) Over the last two seasons, he has a 9.2 BPM in the regular season(box plus minus) and a 1.0 BPM in the playoffs WORST OF ALL: HE IS 9/38 IN CLUTCH(within 5 points, last 5 minutes by NBA definition) SITUATIONS DURING HIS PLAYOFF CAREER, WITH AN UNFATHOMABLE TS% of 35.7%

Joel can get a better supporting cast around phili by getting marcus smart or d’angelo russell I dont know how well they would fit but if they like playing for the 76ers they can be real contenders, they could also get trade tobias harris for a young guy that just got drafted in the past few years.

2:43 Currently there as less than 5 minutes left in the game and Kuzma has 9 points. Don't think hes making 25+ Rozier only had 2 assists though.

Good stuff. Very underrated. The Ringer guys, that Zach Trio, is like listening to NBA casuals talking in the pretzel line at Crypto. Coming here you actually feel like you've learned something -- even when you play the hypotheticals. Keep it up, bruh -- S LA Y I N G.

Thinking that a team will show up well in the playoffs the same year they make a huge trade a mid-season is, well, bad thinking. Just doesn't work. Takes at least a season to gel and develop chemistry needed in the playoffs, not to mention the Finals. Good luck, Philly, if you make a huge trade at the deadline, you'll need it if your goal is a chip.

Embiid an put up monster numbers now but that won't shut up his critics yet. He has to go all the way or at least the finals. Embiid shutting up critics now is premature. The real test is yet to come.

who would have have thought during the Bubble season that in 2024 Caruso would be in the top 5 prime trade targets for all contenders... Oh wait, the advanced analytics said that he impacted defence more than AD and he wasn't a net negative on offence and he's been improving offensively since he joined the Bulls.

@@Daryl524 good point but siakam is making it hard on the raptors cause he's telling everyone he's looking to explore free agency. This could make it harder on the raptors to find some truly great assets for him

Honestly the Sixers had their best chance so far in 2019 when they were really stacked. If they would have won that close series with the Raptors, they would have ended up winning the chip that year.

I don't like that 3 way deal for the Raptors. They don't really want a first round pick in 3 years and Melton for Siakam. Siakam is worth more imo. I don't think they're going to settle for anything less than 2 firsts, or at least a guy with more upside than Melton along with a pick.

Using dame as an example of signing and bailing is lame. They offered him that extension WAY earlier than they needed to and he balled out hard for two seasons for the blazers. He had his best statiscal season of his career and the blazers decided to rebuild the second after he signed that extension .
