That's a way of thinking, I guess it's sort of a byproduct of being into logic, philosophy & etc.. WIth philosophy, you're always questioning your own beliefs, with time you yourself doesn't give a shit about your own opinions so much anymore, opinion and vanity are just obstacles to thinking straight so it doesn't matter(Marcus Aurelius and I guess stoics completely disregarded it, it's actually classic philosophy that most people didn't caught yet, appearances and opinions are very low on the "information scale"), what matter is what's true, what you weren't able do pierce through, etc. I had heard a piece of this interview on the exercise part, surprised to see then that the guy is a full-on philosophy geek hahaha
@Ek05 жыл бұрын
This was not eloquent in the least... it was Firas arguing semantics and in a contrived way.
@robertdiggins75785 жыл бұрын
@@Ek0 could you give an example, paraphrase, so I can get where you're coming from? I agreed with the perspective and find a lot of people have trouble questioning authority, whether if it's from a lack of desire or ability, or constraints from the social environment. Are you dissatisfied with his ability to explain ideas you have already considered or is this your reaction to his ideas? In either case, I'd be interested in more specific information about your judgment, because you didn't mention an example. Personally, I'm entertaining the idea that Time is simply a method for observing the ratios between multiple series of events, instead of a dimension or part of one. I also have a tendency to think that anyone should be able to describe reality in their own language and see "math is the language of physics" as a copout, when that phrase is used to avoid questions or consideration of ideas. I've been around some respected theoretical physicists for most of my life and always noticed that the geniuses were able to speak mostly English. The man was trying to relay some ideas which have been considered for a long time in the West and probably a lot longer in Eastern philosophy. I'm no expert, but I thought he did a good job trying to describe the problems Descartes faced and why he concluded what he did. I also had an experience, walking home from school, when I was 7 (40 years ago), that blew my mind for a few seconds. After noticing that I learned a laugh from another kid, it hit me like a flash that everything I did was learned behavior and it scared me that I couldn't easily identify what aspects of myself were essential to my identity. And I've always hated new age BS. I also used to take out bullies on the playground and have been aware of the authoritarianism around me, wherever I may be. So, where are you coming from, with your harsh review, which wasn't backed up at all? So I would have been interested in further explanation of his ideas concerning the "truth" of religion.
@Ek05 жыл бұрын
@@robertdiggins7578 Firas uses semantics to discredit science? This is a contrived logic in itself. How does labeling water boiling at 100c as "scientific fact" and then pointing out that water does not always boil at 100c make science "woo"?... Firas presents a flawed definition, proves the definition is flawed, and that makes science less credible?... what in the fuck?... The scientific fact relating to boiling point is "For a given pressure, different liquids will boil at different temperatures." If you Google "boiling water" that definition from Wikipedia is the first result. This man is wasting my time with his nonsense words while trying to sound sophisticated.

seriously. I wanted to scream at Joe that entire argument. Many scientists will even tell you science is far from certain. We reach one conclusion and then a contradictory conclusion a year later. Studies about diet and health will "prove" one thing that turns out to be wrong because as humans we did not have all the information yet to get the real answers. Those real answers rarely come because our understanding of the universe is never finished. Joe lives way too deep in his own head if he can't understand why even science has false narratives and misinformation. Science is not math. Science is meant to change and be proven wrong. He was treating him like he's a Creationist or something when he was simply stating what many if not most within the scientific community would agree with, if they didn't feel personally attacked.

@@Nyli. but we actually don't know what temperature is. There's is nothing in the universe that you can point to and say "this is temperature". There are three ways of knowing things: - empiricism (science) - deductively (math) - intuition (this is where religion comes in) people who are unable to grasp this ought to learn more before they argue "X is based on evidence and Y isnt" Firas is a great teacher. You can empirically show neural reactions corresponding to the coffee and the taste that the body perceives it as via quantifiable measures that are not mutually exclusive to only your self (as other humans can also be shown have those neural reactions if experiment repeated), but rather as the concious ("intuition") feeling that only you can 'experience' ... if that makes sense.

@taimaishu996 жыл бұрын
Seems like theres a mix of the end was horrible vs the end was amazing. To clarify some of the criticisms: 1) Firas speaks from an education in philosophy and is very clearly citing sources that are very easily recognized. 2) The argument is NOT against science its instead an explanation of the philosophy of science. Philosophy and science are NOT mutually exclusive. Philosophy goes into thought, reason, logic, moral, ethics, etc. and naturally goes hand in hand with economics, law, politics, psychology, statistics, math, physics, anthropology, SCIENCE etc. (many people who study philosophy often had a background in one of those other fields as well). 3) Here's THE BIG ONE I think people did not get. The main argument here was that the philosophy of science is that scientific fact is a TEMPORARY TRUTH. People are all over the place essentially saying "if you don't believe in science then you believe in religion and religion is BS, because it is science it is true". The main issue here is you should NOT blindly follow science [similarly to religion!]. This may sound similar to Eddie Bravo's you can't believe anything, but Firas is moreso saying we are working with the best information given to us *at the moment* and if something potentially better comes up we should be open to the idea of it because we can never prove it is undoubtedly the best, it is a temporary truth that we will learn more about in a scientific revolution [similar to adapting training methods/fight science/all science]. Its not question everything and believe in nothing [Eddie Bravo], its instead GIVEN this is true [we can accept it temporarily to move on] THEN these are the options/problems we have OR if this is false THEN these are the options/problems we have. [Essentially the foundation of computer programming just true do this, false do this] Another key point was to understand many "facts"/"laws" that people think of for science are actually claims that have a higher probability or likelihood of being true based on history. That for the most part is fine, but do not blindly follow everything and its okay to entertain the thought of other options that may turn out to have some truth to them [although some people are just not at the level that you'd like to really tolerate or engage with for this]. 3b) Adding to the philosophy of science: Science seeks truth. Now if you believe in science then if someone shows something to be more true and the previouse knowledge we had to be false then you HAVE to accept that the previous was FALSE. Science should be accepting of the option of being wrong because in order to always be right [which science seeks to be] you have to adapt and accept the correct answer. "Woo-woo" Ex1) Thor comes in with a "magic" plant that when ingested allows you to fly. Tony Stark aka Ironmon claims it is science and in the scientific process observes the plant. Tony Stark figures it out, what does he observe? The plant making human cells weightless due to an element or cell reaction that does not exist in our world. Now to make it science he gives it the name aeroplantius. Now its science? Every time someone eats this plant they can fly. Why? Because they ingested aeroplantius. Oh okay so that works. Yes. Science. Historically every time someone has ingested it now they can fly, and on a molecular level he has observed it and sees what it does, therefore it is proven that if you give someone this plant that now has a name and a scientific process that it will work and is PROVEN. Science. Woo-woo. [Note: I clearly made this example up and there may be some faults there, but the point should be understandable for the most part] Ex2) Instead of Thor's magic plant lets go more real world, say lemons. Pirates getting sick and are dying all over. People test [science] it and the answer is LEMONS! Now from testing it is historically proven that lemons are the answer to sickness/scurvy. Fastforward, turns out oh no not lemons its oranges that have the most vitamin C and oh wait its not fruit that is the answer but vitamin C. Fastforward to today everyone knows vitamin C help prevent colds, but wait "Vitamin C has been studied for many years as a possible treatment for colds, or as a way to help prevent colds. But findings have been inconsistent. Overall, experts have found little to no benefit from vitamin C for preventing or treating the common cold." [source: google. scurvy is a caused by a lack of vitamin C so maybe its just scruvy and not the rest and its marketing? and if I'm wrong I can accept that, but science proves science wrong and thats okay]. Anyways this was a real long way of saying, we can observe and observe and observe and we'll always have findings. Findings help us with the likelihood or probability of repeating what has happened in the past. Just because we have a more thorough ways to observe now does not mean we complete knowledge of something. Like the magic plant if we see vitamin C interacting with the human body we see a reaction and based on our historic observations we can predict what will happen. The reason as to why it does is simply because "it just does". Super philosophy argument here but this is the tautology Firas was talking about. Essentially you can't really answer any deeper than that when someone asks why. The answer we've given it is because "its vitamin C and vitamin C does that" similarly to how "its aeroplantius and aeroplantius makes you fly". We've essentially named everything and the name identifies what it does. Don't get me wrong this is VERY USEFUL. But when you break everything down the answer to it is "it just does" now what makes this potential woo-woo is that reaction are not consistent. One element/chemical/thing will have a different reaction with another thing and there is no way to predict these reactions without observing it first [AKA applying the scientific method]. Just because you've used fire to burn wood or plastic or oil does not mean when you apply it to water you'll know it'll burn too. There's no way to know if we never had a history with it. If its something we've experienced before well now we know, and if its something new thats never happened before we give it a name and define the name with the process that is what it is/does. Potentially a scientific revolution because now theres this whole new existence of element and reactions. Side philosophy note: Just because we named it though does not mean it didn't exist before we gave it a name. This was what Firas was talking about consciousness and existence and math falls into this weird realm of it creates all these relationships in nature/existence, but it is something we somewhat constructed because it is our measurement tool/system [numbers could have been base 12 if we had 12 fingers instead of 10, just a little food for thought on how that would shift all of math] ANYWAYSS WOO-WOO LEMONS Ex3) Maybe closer to the "random" and "divine calculator" stuff in the video but lets go with Placebo effect is "woo-woo". Given more or less same physical health & testing for manipulated variables and whatnot the placebo effect has been scientifically proven to be true/probable/likely and repeatable. There's all these things we can measure with modern day science, but examing the placebo effect there's a lot of "woo-woo" type stuff that doesn't feel very science, yet has been proven by science to work. Until we have a divine calculator that can measure belief the same way we can mg's of drugs then it seems like woo-woo to me. Maybe thats not what woo-woo is, but this example kind of makes you think about the power of belief and mentality [biochemical reaction that is not woo-woo?]. Anyways super TLDR: - Firas is educated in philosophy and is clearly citing credible philosophers. - Philosophers are not mutually exclusive from science and other fields, many have collaborated or specialized with other fields. Given info from other fields philosophers can make logical/sound points given what you're saying is true [and if its not true well then there's a whole othe discussion there] - the philosophy of science is that scientific fact is a TEMPORARY TRUTH. Science should not be blindly followed, scientist themselves seek to find the more correct truth and will inherently have to prove their old truths wrong. Which is good because you should adapt and accept the right answer. -The view is not to be cynical of everything and that we can't do anything, but instead that we'll work with the best we have RIGHT NOW and if something better comes out don't just doubt it because you've found proof yours works. There is NOT proof that it is undoubtedly the best [this is the way he is as a trainer too!] [second note: there may be proof/history of the alternative being worst, so you could potentially take that with less weight but unless you have tried EVERYTHING you can not be absolutely sure your method is the BEST/better than the alternative]. - We name things so we could give them the definition of them doing what they do. Whenever something new comes up we need a name to call it, so we give it one. Reactions, processes, elements, etc. are all named. The issue here is that it all boils down to a tautology because we constructed it as one. What is 1+1? 2. What is 2? 2. Language does very much the same thing with describing [scientific processes &] words with other words. - At some point it breaks down to what we're observing. We develop more in depth ways to observe, but the answer to why it does what it does is because mitochondria does what mitochondria does, helium does what helium does, and atoms do what atoms do. We don't practically need to know why it does what it does, science wants to. If we introduce a magic plant that makes you fly we observe it, give it a name, explain that it does what it does with the name that it does. We can never fully understand, but because of this we can always understand better.

Such a philosophical style of conversation from Zahabi. I can definitely tell he studied. His presentation of ideas is in the classic manner. Awesome guest.

Faras: The telescopic mind that looks at things in a way that allows him to see the forest through the trees. His mind explores everything and can comprehend the macro clockwork of how all factors come together in a fight. He finds the optimal balance for training and cornering his own fighters, and attacks other fighters from unique angles that exploit their hidden weaknesses. Danaher: The microscopic mind that hones in onto the minute details of things and is able to break them down into systematic parts that even experts are oblivious to. GSP: The lucky bastard who had the common sense to be these guys’ robot and become the greatest pound for pound fighter of all time.

Question; could they have turned CM Punk into someone ufc-worthy?
@bigimportantman15446 жыл бұрын
James Talman No chance. The guy is tough and can take a beating, but he doesn’t have the killer instinct, athletic ability, or body to compete at a high level. GSP is also incredibly intelligent compared to most fighters. When Firas talks about flooding a fighter’s mind with too much knowledge, GSP was able to absorb far more data and implement an intelligent strategy with it in real time against his opponents than an average fight IQ fighter like CM punk would be able to.

People talking shit about Firas Zahabi not being a philosophy scholar and just and just an MMA trainer, are full of horseshit and didn't watch the conversation here. Firas Zahabi is academically educated in philosophy. That's his academic major. That's what he graduated in. That's why he makes so much sense that it makes you uncomfortable. Don't live your life being scared and accepting social conditioning and mainstream media narratives. Just think and learn for yourself, you have an amazing human intuition.

But he exaggerates so much that he verges into postmodernism... and at some points it's dangerous. Eg. when he says science is just history and deduction is not part of it. And a lot of other postmodernist (blindly relativistic) approaches he has. Neither Joe is a philosopher nor Firas is a serious one.

Everyone who is shitting on Firas on his comments regarding science: Please don't forget that he was simply giving a great conversation and simply introducing Joe to what a university philosophy lesson is like. You simply hammer through ideas and debate/discuss them whilst citing who came up with the idea (which he made very clear and was only offering what texts are out there). It was super entertaining and I'm sure it got everyone's brain ticking. Doesn't mean it is verbatim, it was to get people thinking. If you are shitting on him. You are clearly not thinking and just feeling paranoid. The guy appreciates science, I swear everyone keeps cherry picking.
@aznbspikey6 жыл бұрын
How is everyone cherry picking when he’s saying the laws of science are “woo”? He clearly doesn’t understand science even at the most basic levels. He doesn’t even know the difference between a theory and law.
