Awesome update - a lot of people seem to only remember the likes of Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn as great, but the truth was at the time, many of these were considered as great(er) too. Would love to hear the other symphony from this CD

Although not a musicologist like Carey Coleman, I can hear this composer experimenting with different instrumental groupings and harmonies that point the way to the Romantic style. Sterkel is a composer from the intermediate period between Classicism and Romanticism who is definitely worth hearing.

Wow! This really is a very fine work, I'd go far to say Mozart would have been pleased to have compose it during the 1770's.

This is quite a bit better then any of the symphonies that Mozart composed in the 1770s. Mozart did not even really develop his own style and counterpoint in his symphonies until his 25th symphony.

Greetings again Brian, or should I say Muzio, reincarnated! I'd say that Sterkel was greater than Mozart: far more original , displaying greater depth, a far more evolved emotion, broader deeper and altogether more mature. I cannot see Mozart moving beyond his very late adolescence, emotionally-mentally, intellectually or otherwise. Sterkel speaks as an adult male, Mozart more as a mature youth seeking a fuller maturity but not quite attaining it , hence his great popular appeal to the masses; he was brilliant though, insofar as his level of intellectual and emotional maturity allowed.Mozart has the gloss of true depth, but really lacks it in full. Sterkel definitely possesses something more. Shanti.

Though Sterkel seemed to be a very fine composer, can he match the greatness achieved by Mozart' in his last two symphonies, I doubt it, otherwise he would be remembered a lot more than he is.

Yet another neglected genius that we wait to hear more from. Sterkel composed 24 symphonies, 6 piano concertos, and various other works. I would love to hear more of them, but someone needs to record them first.

Brian Knapp and some people need to upload the sheet music. Frequently university orchestras and amateur orchestras usually use the free sheet music and this would be useful in building more repertoire.

Sorry, I don't think that Sterkel is a genius. He's one of the many composers of the 18th century, not more, not less - and not very inspiring or genuine.

@@DressedForDrowning What do you mean by genuine? I don't know if he is a genius, but he is clearly above average, even for the 18th century. Not all the 18th century compsers are equal.

Painting... The Tepidarium Theodore Chasseriau A tepidarium was the warm (tepidus) bathroom of the Roman baths heated by a hypocaust or underfloor heating system. The speciality of a tepidarium is the pleasant feeling of constant radiant heat, which directly affects the human body from the walls and floor. --Wikipedia

What's interesting about people that AREN'T Mozart (W.A) is that one can see the trends in place more so than with him. He wrote what he want for the most part. This composer was following the ideas of the period and his grande ouverture from 1812 is a shining example of what music post Mozart was like.

According to the list of works on the web site of the Sterkel Gesellschaft (www.sterkel-gesellschaft.org/de/) this symphony is not from the 1870s but from 1893. Much more plausible looking at the style of the music.

1. Much more people than that could listen to symponies. There were public concerts and you could just buy your ticket, like today. 2. The idea that people threw their waste in the street is a myth. 3. There were no slaves in Germany during the 18th century.
