Omg this was PHENOMENAL!!! I could have listened for another 2 hours. This was the most in-depth conversation with Johann Hari that I have found on KZbin. I hope you have him back on your show when his new book comes out. Looking forward to seeing more of your content and definitely subscribing to your channel. So glad I found a place where I can hear deep, engaging and civilized discourse on such important issues.

I became more depressed after listening to this episode, having realised I live in worst of all the worlds

Sorry you are feeling that way. Maybe this episode can also provide hope that we can build human connections and address the root causes of depression. Hope you can get the support you need.

@@econtalkwithruss Sorry I gave wrong impression. Luckily I don't suffer from depression. I just wanted to express mild criticism of the dark mood of this episode. I don't know what it's like in the US, but in my country most people also talk about widespread alienation between people. Then I go out, and see pubs full of people socialising, having fun with each other. It has become fashionable to portray current times as worst ever, which may indeed cause depression in some people. Kind of self-fulfilling prophecy. That's the reason for my comment. Thanks for caring. This is still my favourite show

I have lived half my life in Europe and my other half in the US, I can compare and contrast these societies; what’s causing this for the most part is because we have build a society under the ideology of neoliberalism where the only thing that matters is GDP and individualism. Adam Curtis touches on the undoing of the community and introduction of technocratic gov and managerialism in most of his movies..The neoliberal ideology is based on simplified models of humans as robots that operate like commodities in the market competing against one another and you don’t connect with your competitors. It’s definitely capitalism we have reduced work to a micromanaged meaningless process in order to increase returns.
