you must not pay attention to business news much. silvergate defaulted on its depositors a few months ago. SVB is the 2nd bank that has collapsed in the last few months, not the first. the reaction will be the same: deal with it. the account holders WILL eventually get all their money back during restructuring, but they will have to wait in line because they will not be the first to get made whole. their corporate bond holders will get paid before the depositors.... im not sure how much debt they owe to bomd holders, havent checked their books on yahoo finance, but if its alot then theres a chance some depositors wont get all their money back. there's alot of garbage long term bonds out now because short term yields are so high, so if there's a run on the banks then some banks will have to sell those long term bonds at low prices and take huge losses so they they can remain solvent to paid their customer accounts. basically, the potential collapse of more banks is dependant upon whether customers run on the banks. if they run on banks then small and mid cap banks could fold. if you have your money in the top 7 banks (u.s. bancorp or better), then you will be fine because those big banks shored up their bonds and sold their risky MBS's six months ago at the first sign of trouble. this problem has been brewing for the better part of a year.

They all do this. The problem here was their incredible shrinking capital reserves (treasuries and commercial property MBS), and their need for liquidity induced a bank run. It shows that the Fed monitoring of their capital reserves was asleep at the switch. All this right after Powell said the FOMC could do more than a 0.25/meeting (clearly he didn’t know how stupid he would look).

More and more Americans are going to their banks, tapping into their savings to make ends meet in this awful economy. At the moment, it hasn't been so bad; many people were forced to take on second jobs, part-time jobs, but they have been managing to stay afloat. But at the same time, this is causing the Feds to believe the economy is still too hot, that the rate hikes haven't been working, so they are talking of continuing to increase rates even higher, which is causing a vicious cycle. At some point, there will simply not be enough hours in the day and enough energy to take on any more work to keep up, and people will really dig deep into their savings, then. What will the banks do, then? I would take what happened to Silicon Valley Bank as the canary in the coal mine, and act accordingly to put some hedges against what appears to be at the horizon.

What is preventing companies from paying rent on unused office space? The companies are still making money, employees are working from home and saving utility costs that would otherwise increase office rent costs. A month ago , an African country settled an oil tanker delivery from Saudi Arabia - in physical gold bars . “ ordinary citizens need to become their own central bank by obtaining physical gold and silver “ - an unknown economist .
