John Carroll | Searching for Meaning in an Age of Unbelief

If the modern West is both statistically and culturally no longer Christian, who will save us now? What remains? Are we still searching for meaning in an age of unbelief?
In the sixth Ramsay Lecture for 2023, titled ‘Who Will Save Us Now? Searching for Meaning in an Age of Unbelief’ acclaimed sociologist and author John Carroll, explores the psyche of the post-Christian West.
Drawing on literature, history, and popular culture he argues that while we are no longer a predominately Christian society, we are by nature saviour seeking and this ‘saviour syndrome’ impels us to find someone, or some equivalent, to show the way to a better life, and counter the quintessentially modern ordeal of unbelief.
John Carroll is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at La Trobe University in Melbourne and a Senior Fellow of Yale University. This lecture draws on Professor Carroll’s most recent book published in May 2023 by Sutherland House titled, ‘The Saviour Syndrome, Searching for Hope and Meaning in an Age of Unbelief’.
