John Daly does the unthinkable at Baltusrol at the 1993 U.S. Open by getting on the green on the 630 yard par 5 17th hole in 2 strokes. Long John remains the only player to ever do so.

I was along the fairway when he hit the second shot. My friend and I followed Daly around for his Friday round. We kept track of him and about 20 minutes before we figured he was headed to tee up, we got the the 17th tee box and it was 20 deep already. My friend said “we want to see the second shot!” We headed down the fairway which was kind of empty. We wandered down and a guy with a yardage book said to us “this is about 300 yards”. We stood next to each other when the first 2 tee shots landed well short of us. Then Dalys shot roll past another 20 yards. THATS when the crowd arrived, like a tsunami. He was smoking like a chimney. Put his butt down and hit that shot pure. We all waited unit the crowd in the stands green side erupted. Word was he drove through the green Thursday. Epic talent and coolest guy to walk the fairway.

To think the amount of talent one needs, to be able to play on the PGA Tour without really putting in hours upon hours of practice every day... That is really telling. If John would have had Tiger, Vijay or Phil's work ethics I see him easily winning 20 PGA tour event more and probably a handful of majors... He was really a phenom!

I watched Big John (v.friendly) in 93, in a practice round at Wentworth. He was easily pitching past Langer's finished drives. But besides his length, it was how quickly he was playing.- I could barely keep up and all I was doing was walking. The last drive I saw him hit was 320 into a breeze at the 17th, and the light + temp was dropping as well. I stopped for a breather.

I'll never forget Daly was in Melbourne early 90s and I was lucky he was doing an exhibition driving show complete with Channel 7 commentator Peter Landy but instead of over at Royal Melbourne this was held in front of a standing room only gallery on the first tee off the adjoining public course Sandringham. The first hole is 320 metres and Daly was teeeing it up with his eriver and landing it on the first green, or bouncing it right through! He has an amazing long backswing, way past vertocle which shows how flexible he is. There's viseos of the pro ling drivers competing and they're real tall, built heavy and they're very big men. Dakt was fat, but not tall but he had a very exaggerated backswing and hit it very little ng. He ultimately disgraced himself here in Australia, hitting some rice balls I a lake then throwing in his clubs and walking off. But he won two majors, which equals Greg Nirman, and won the Open at St Andrews. He played real smart that finag round and in the play off, and get was always drinking, gambling and enjoying KFC but he could really play, and I've played the first at Sandringham hundreds of times and can only get some thirty metres shirt. Daly could land it on or over the green. It's a huge advantage. And he did an exhibition I'll never forget. Long John Daly, the man who was a world beater. And a wife beater

mattc941 You don’t know me but in my twenties I loved my one iron and played it between 240-255. The longer resulting by the roll out from a draw. What makes Daly’s shot inhuman was that he carried it 300 yards. The only other pro that could do that was Jack. He often carried his one iron 260 yards with persimmon and balata.

When you think about the equipment they were using in the early 90s, it's crazy. Hitting a soft ball (that wasn't designed for distance) 300+ yards, off the grass, with a one iron.......👀 Reminiscent of Jack Nicklaus' hitting - he was hitting the ball 350 yards with 1960s equipment!

It was incredible how smooth his swing was with the amount of overswing he was known for. Most people go for a massive overswing and chaos ensues routinely with a lucky shot every so often lol.

your timing needs to be REALLY precise to play like that, like, immaculately precise. even for a man of his abilities it created some inconsistencies in his play throughout his career. that is why you don't see it more often, as you said, most golfers could not succeed with a swing like that, it is too coiled and forceful to make use of the power generated. john daly did not succeed because of it, but despite it. he was naturally gifted.

It's funny how "distance" is so admired in the game of golf yet rarely does hitting it far (or the furthest) make any difference to their overall scores compared with an average golfer.....it is all about accuracy .......as the saying goes: "The drive is for show, the putt is for the dough".

Yeah it really shows how special Daly was. He went 630 yards in 2 shots with what is now Stone Age equipment. Also, he absolutely smoked that iron shot. Carrying an iron near 300 yards is one of the most impressive things I've seen done with a golfball. There's few that could do that even today with modern equipment.

I once bought a 2 iron as a gag club. I couldn't get any lift on the balls and they would just laser down the range around 160 yards like a crappy hit stinger. I get about 170 - 180 out of my 4 hybrid and 200 out of my 3 fairway wood for comparison.
