Contested each May, the PGA Championship is the second major championship in golf’s annual rotation, and perennially features the strongest field in the men's game based on the Official World Golf Rankings. Known for dramatic finishes and notable champions, the Wanamaker Trophy-which has been awarded to the winner since 1916-is inscribed with names such as Koepka, McIlroy, Woods, Mickelson, Nicklaus, and Player. If John was as kind to himself as he is to others then he may have won many more times. But I for one am glad that he achieved what he did. As you can see by my handle I am a longtime and loyal fan of his. Seeing him win at the home of golf is possibly the most inspiring win I’ve seen in sports. A flawed but appreciated genius.

He was cracking in titanium drivers faces back then in the late 90s and early 2000 John Daly was hitting 7-irons 195 yards probably a 37 degree 7 iron back than which is unbelievable. Anyone who doesn't think John Daly with a lower spinning better-performing ball more optimize metals and equipment what an average 325 or more. He was unbelievably fast back then he was the first player to average 300 everyone had the same equipment back then but he was the first to do it. Then he literally led the PGA and driving distance for over a decade consecutively so tell me again how you wouldn't be probably the top driver in the PGA today with the equipment they have. Not to mention he did all this without ever actually training for golf.

Daly is one of the great "might have beens" in sports history. He had tremendous talent but also had severe issues of addiction and discipline. The fact that he was able to be so successful through all his issues shows how extremely talented he was.

ya, I was a casual golfer in my teens in the 90's... and it was unbelievable watching the equipment change literally every 2 years. Taylor Made stuff and the Big Berthas kept getting bigger. Ball technology was changing. Throughout the 80's there wasn't a lot of innovation.

Don't forget, this was his FIRST pga tour win ever, he was basically an unknown player at the time, like, just came out of nowhere. If I remember right, he was even a 3rd alternate just to be able to play (3 other players had to pass on their chance to play that week for him to even make the field). One of the best underdog stories ever.

I’m sorry this doesn’t come close to those upsets you mention. It doesn’t really apply for one thing and Daly was a good player who went on to win another major. I’m not saying this wasn’t a moment in sports that anyone who saw remembers. It’s just not on the same level as the events you mentioned in any reasonable comparison.

The point however has little to do with whether I or you knew them or didn’t and has to do with the fact that they were unknowns hardly much different than John Daly. Which then begs the question how it is you can claim Daly’s victory was one of the top 5 greatest upsets and shocking wins in American sports history, when I just named 7 or 8 in the same sport, in the same time period, who played in the same events, who by all accounts were just as improbable and unexpected to win in the same way John Daly did. You’re not saying it was the greatest upset and win in major history or even in golf history. You’re saying it was one of the greatest wins (or upsets) of all time history in all sports. I don’t know but I can’t name a single fight similar to Tyson-Douglas that I watched live over 30 years ago. Nor can I remember an upset of similar significance as the Jets-Baltimore (Colts) Super Bowl which I didn’t watch (I’m not that old) but was more than just a 17 pt spread and subsequent beatdown by the Jets. It was still the AFL vs NFL in the minds of everyone at the time (they officially merged that yr or the year after I think) which added more to it. I guess the last thing I’ll say for now is that if you’re saying Daly’s win was the most dynamic, interesting and memorable out those I mentioned, and therefore it stands above them historically in some way, then we don’t disagree on anything. But if you’re saying any more than that then you need to quantify it in a way that clearly sets Daly’s win apart from the those I mentioned before you even begin to try and set it apart from all others. It just doesn’t cut it and that’s why I responded in the first place. Not because I wanted to be a jerk or rain on someone’s enthusiasm or apparent good nature. Not for any reason like that at all. I’m just responding because I think you’re mistaken.

JD went to the same high school I went to. I was in 8th grade after this he came and played a local course and a bunch of us JPGA kids got to skip school and walk around with him. Super nice guy at least to us at the time.

What a day that was. That Sunday was Magic. The PGA Tour was so much better with John in it. John will go down as 1 of the Legends. He helped change the game of Golf with that Monster Drive of his, he helped bring in Fun instead of always being so serious. 👍🇺🇲🗽🇬🇧👍

​@@bigmike-mg6fj My PW has a loft of 41 degrees. I call that cheating. I am not very strong and use my PW for 120-130 yard shots with a smooth swing. If I give it all, I think I could send it 140 with that PW. I am deeply disappointed that there are no official rules around the loft on clubs. Sure, we all have our own games. But it's annoying that there are no real comparisons anymore. When someone said that they can hit 180 yards with their 7 iron, it's almost meaningless.

Every player on tour can chip and make 6 footers. Being long and straight is the only advantage Daly had on the field. And being the longest doesn’t mean much. Daly only won on the PGA tour a few times

Commentator said that, for most players, a 6-iron would be needed for a 151-yard shot. That was in 1991. Today (2024), pros hit 6-irons about 190 to 205. No wonder golf courses are being overpowered.

Got the chance to meet him one time at a college course where he was speaking to Young golf course management majors. Before they showed up he was taking a few swings on the par 3 #10 just behind the clubhouse. The only interesting thing about what he was doing… Is it wasn’t standing in the teebox. He was standing on the other side of the clubhouse in the parking lot hitting the ball over the clubhouse and they were landing on the green of that par 3. So yes I agree he could easily have been on the green of many par 4 holes.

If Daly could have stayed at about that body weight throughout his career and been had some course management he could have won 10 majors. That's no shit. He was just so much longer than everybody that he could turn major courses into par 68s with his par 5 advantage. He is a case study on somebody who was gifted a tremendous amount of talent and didn't respect it with the way he treated his body. It's a miracle he's still alive with what he's put into his body throughout his life.
