I trained at Renzo’s in the 90s when Kukuk was just about to leave and when the Serra brothers (Matt and Nick) were purple belts and Vinny and Mito were instructors.

Wow, going waaaay back! I started when Craig Kukuk was teaching in Red Bank, NJ. I found out about it through an ad in Black Belt magazine. At that time, the only ones teaching it were Steve Maxwell in Philly, and Dave Lentz in NJ. Great times, great memories.

@@bjjbrawler1 Was that before or after he was teaching at the 112 west 27th street location in NYC with Renzo (I forget what floor, but remember well the damn rickety elevator that i thought i'd definitely die in)?
@bjjbrawler12 жыл бұрын
@@ericd9827 Hey Eric! I started training there in late 1994/ maybe 1995. Craig was rolling there on the first day I showed up. I believe this was before Renzo's school.

@@bjjbrawler1 Cool, I think it was 96 or 97 when I was there. I travelled from RI, so I only went on Saturdays, which was a no-gi day.
@ericd98272 жыл бұрын
@@bjjbrawler1 I just checked and I started in 96. I only know that because shortly after I started, Renzo began preparing for his fight with Oleg Taktarov, and I got to roll with him when he was preparing for it.

Renzo was great when i was there, he used say hej big guy, i am 6'3" ... kukak was still there, he had no patience like renzo had... matt serra was only blue belt while i trained there with my friend, i knew that matt would go places because he lived there and had the talent...too bad i had injury and never could come back

As a boxing trainer that's done limited ju jitsu it shouldn't be hard if the students are PAYING ATTENTION to explain the difference between guard and mount!

I wish I found Renzo Gracie when I was younger. I was talented and did Jiujitsu every day but unfortunately they were hiding information. Had a good’s show me just as good as runs out, but not the heart.
