My dad has two Farmalls, a '47 C and a '65 140. Other than rebuilding the generators and new points & condensers the motors are stock. Original valves, rings, seats, bearing. The '47 C has only had the valves adjusted three times in 77 years. The 140 once. And your right, they have straight pipes and sound great. Just pulled a cultipacker with the '47 yesterday. Ran perfect.

A 1970-72 4020 Gas is an odd bird, for one of the most popular tractors ever made by that color of green. By 1970 the 4020 was well liked as a diesel by users but it was no longer the top selling Deere by 72(surpassed by the 4320). I must say watching Ross work a synchro is hilarious. Being almost out of gas was a big problem with gas 4020's. The hand throttle stops at PTO speed unless you pull the knob out, foot pedal goes all the way through the rpm range.

Great video Ross, I wasn't expecting to see a 4020 on this channel. I just purchased a 67 4020 ps diesel, the engine was bad which I knew and am in the process of inframing it now. The tractor lived it's life here in Aroostook County potato country and it looks it. I'm in hopes some day it will look as good as the one here. I suspect it won't get that good of a resto but I will for sure try to come close. I'm not a farmer but have some field work to use it for. Just enough to keep it around after I retire.

Years ago there was a farmer in my area that always had a 4010 diesel, then the 4020 diesel. Traded every year. Well in 1970, the local Deere dealer didn't have a diesel in stock, but, had a new shiny gas 4020 out front. He was hesitant, but the salesmen talked him into it by telling him you won't tell a difference. Ole Norman owned that tractor a full 2 months til the first diesel arrived and he traded it off on the diesel. He and anybody else that ran it absolutely hated it 😂

I have 1972 4020, that l could never get running right. It finally lost coolant and took out a main bearing. Luckily I found a 1969 diesel for it. The original problem turned out to be a worn lower bushing in the oil pump, the points could not be set properly. The diesel made it aa much better tractor.

Ross, you and me agree on a good few points there. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with gas tractors. My dad has an 1850 gas and I love it to death. Wouldn’t have it any other way. The synchro range transmission leaves a lot to be desired. I was mowing hay with my dad’s 4620 and it was a pain in the kanootson changing speeds. I’m used to the pattern but it shifts hard and every other thing. I really could’ve used a hydra power or over/under. And lastly, we both love straight piped gas engines! I so badly want to put a straight pipe on my dad’s 1850 lol. He says you can’t stand it but he underestimates how crazy I am lol

Hi Ross , love the video just wanted to say I had a similar experience on my uncles 3020 it would run at times then just die , when I would try to restart I noticed it would fire up then die like in 20 seconds,I also noticed that the resistor in the ignition switch would turn red and smoke , anyway what I found was the plate under the distributor where the points are sittings was oxidized building resistance and loose connection , so I scuffed the plate with sand paper and all is great

I have one of those. 10 to 15 years ago mine started going through a phase every 6 months where it would run like absolute crap. It’s a loader tractor and gets 12 to 15 hours a year. I would replace this and that and it fixed it until the next time. Finally after the 4th time I discovered that the condensers Deere was getting from China were junk. I put one in from NAPA, that was made in Mexico. I guess that’s better because it fixed the problem and I have had issues since. One of the older John Deere mechanics confirmed the bad condensers as he had one in the shop that he had just changed all that out and it still wouldn’t run right. After putting 6 new Chinese condensers on from there parts department, and not getting any to run right or run at all, he found an old one in his tool box and the tractor ran like it should.

I'm with you on this one. If the tractor came with a gas motor keep it that way and same goes for a diesel. My small Deere and Allis are gas motors and they run great and I never have any issues with them. My larger Ford and Massey are diesel and I wouldn't want a tractor that size in gas, but that's my opinion only and mostly for the fuel economy of a 55 and 76 horsepower gas motor. That Deere you had there looked great, sounded great and would without doubt work in the field without complaint.

I agree with you, there is nothing wrong with a gas engine, they were the first to be used widely in the farming industry. There's good and bad in any tractor, be it gas or diesel and that one sounds awesome. My son has one that's a diesel which I used a couple of years ago to do hay. Ran great, but it did like the diesel, I don't know how the gas engine does on usage but I would guess it's a quite of bit, doing hay that is. Great video Ross, loved the scenery and the run of the big JD 4020. Thanks and I hope you have a super day!

Syncro range. 1, 3, reverse. 2, 5, reverse. 4, 7, reverse. 6, and 8. The reverse in 4, and 7 is actually road gear for mounted cotton pickers. Each range can be shifted without having to stop the tractor. The problem with those shifters is after fifty plus years of wear they don't shift well. We had a 3020 gas with a loader on it. We could never keep points in it and finally converted it to an electronic ignition. It was a completely different tractor after that. If a guy wanted to do something different with a gas 3010/20 or 4010/20 there was someone who was building a conversation from the carburetor to port fuel injection using a GM computer and injectors plus an intake manifold he made. His claim was 20% more power with 20% less fuel.

If my memory serves me correctly, the screw on type was prone to cracking, mainly due to people had a very bad tendency of over tightening those screws. If it didn't crack externally, would crack internally. 1 single bolt holds that panel in place Ross, if my memory serves me again, it's at the bottom of the plate, down by the foot platform. His alternator belt looks to be loose. No, you're in 2nd gear. All the gears are on the right side of the shifter, left side is the ranges. 1/3 R, 2/5 R, 4/7 (R if the gear is still there), then 6/8. Park is the only one on the left side. It's a syncro-range transmission. Sycnro's did have their issues, biggest issue is, you can easily put yourself into 2 different ranges at once if there's an issue with the internals where the shifter is. If you pull the black knob on the throttle handle and pull down, you'll go full throttle. The handle should say, pull knob to override stop. :) If the steering was up to par, you could take one finger, spin the steering wheel and it should spin to the stop either direction. JD next gens had the best power steering. Absolutely nothing wrong with a "gas" engine, in fact, gas in many ways are better than diesel. If the owner is smart, he'll add the 2nd battery box on the right side and wire 2 battery's so he has 24v start with 12v charge. Don't care, 6 cylinders always need that little "extra". Great video as always.

I like the gas engines. They are easier for me to work on. I have my grandfather's Farmall B and I have had very little trouble with it. Thanks for standing up for the gas engines. Some people just don't understand originality. It sounded great. I'm not sure if the gas version was the same as the diesel or not. On the hand throttle, if you pulled out on the end of the lever, it would give you a little extra. Then it would be as fast as the foot throttle. Atleast it was that way on the 3010 series. Maybe they didn't have that on the 4020 series.. just a thought. Have a great day and I'll see you later.

I've never seen a side console gas model. Absolutely beautiful machine. My first tractor was a 620 on gas. Yes gasoline !!! It could pull a five plow family bedder in third gear in heavy backland. The owner should never change this one to diesel. If it is factory, the crooked stick shifter would make it a ‘71 or ‘72. This would be one of the last big gas engine tractor Deere made outside of a very few 30 series. Not a unicorn, but not super common either. If the owner is having trouble with it jumping out of time, another poster had it right. The cam runs the oil pump and the distributer is run from the oil pump. As the engine wears, you get a lot of slop in the distributer drive slot and it is a PITA to keep timed.
