I can attest to the possibility of damage from water. I mow our yard with a honda hrx217 and the last 10 minutes last week i was caught in the rain. I pulled my mower back out today and thought otd be a good idea to clean under it. Grass was more than an inch thick and was molded and still wet. Honda uses a type of plastic,i think called nexite for their decks,so nothing was damaged.

I bought the x380 13 months ago and have 150 hours on it. Just after a few days of owning it I had to bypass the seat sensor and reverse button for the blades. I understand they are there for safety reasons but it is a little ridiculous. For a 6k dollar mower I am disappointed with the cheap plastic deck wheels that keep melting off its axle. A buddy has a jd x288 for sale $600.... I think he said x288? Can't find anything on it on KZbin ? Maybe I didn't hear the model name correctly? I had seen it on a trailer and looked pretty nice from 100' away? Has anyone ever heard of a x288 or any similar in size? Any issues to be looking for in buying used? Most important things to be looking for that will be too costly soon?
@WesternEquipment3 жыл бұрын
Look into an LX288. This is probably the model. I would just give it a thorough walk through. Check the battery, make sure it starts. If not, does it need fresh fuel, does it need a full service. Could get into such things as a carburetor or starter which might be costly, but just be thorough on your walk around before you purchase. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

If it is the LX228, then it is a pretty old mower. If it runs and cuts good then I would say it is worth 600. If it doesn’t run then don’t get it

Owned my JD lx188 for 28 years now. It's blowing white smoke for a minute when first starting. I have the cash to upgrade to a new tractor but after looking at what JD has, I'm thinking resolving the lx188's issue and keeping it another few years. Not liking the "improvements" here at all. Also, my water cooled Kawasaki is a lot quieter than that.

what's the best tool to use for sharpening mower blades? I see most people doing it by hand with a file or small electric drill, but it's hard to keep the edge straight doing it by hand. Is there some automated way of sharpening blades with a machine guide to keep the edge straight? How do blade manufacturers sharpen the blade? I doubt they do it by hand. It would be nice to keep the same angle set by the manufacturer, only I never know what that angle is supposed to be. Do John Deere shops have a machine to sharpen blades at a set angle?

All great questions! Let me do some digging and see what I can find for you! Thanks for the comment!

@@WesternEquipment thanks! It kinda frustrates me to see that most people still have to sharpen mower blades the same way it was done 100 years ago. It's like no progress has been made for sharpening mower blades hahahahaha. I used to take my blades to a tool and die machinist and he could put a perfect edge on the blade in about a minute. I have no idea how he did it though, trade secret I guess. He's gone now and when I try to do it myself, it takes several minutes and I just make an ugly mess out of it. So now I just buy new blades and donate my old ones to a small engine shop. It just seems to me in 2020 there should be some easy, automated way of putting a smooth, straight sharp edge on a mower blade at the proper angle without having to take it to a professional. I certainly can't do it by hand.
