Hi-John wasn't known back in '63, as he replaced Chad Mitchell in '65. He was with the Trio for 3 years. I saw him in '68 when he performed at The Greek Theater, saw him perform at Anaheim, Long Beach, Universal Amphitheter for the last time with my late hubby in Sep '80 the day we got home from our honeymoon. Saw him twice host The Tonight Show in the 70's. I absolutely adored/adore John. He is so missed. His music totally uplifts me.

It is a beautiful song! From Wikipedia: "From a Distance" is a song written in 1985 by American singer-songwriter Julie Gold. Gold was working as a secretary at the time for Home Box Office and writing songs in her free time.[1] Gold's friend, Christine Lavin, introduced the song to Nanci Griffith who first recorded it for her 1987 album, Lone Star State of Mind. It quickly became a favorite of Griffith's fans around the world.

Thank you for posting this. The first song John sings ‘From A Distance’ I wrote in 1970. This is the first time I’ve heard him sing it. Henry John D. was and always will be remembered as a wonderful man and my good friend.

What a beautiful song you wrote. I first heard this when Bush I took us to war. My brother in law served in Desert Storm. Whenever I heard your song, it was as if I was praying to God that others would hear your message and bring peace to the world. John certainly stood for all those principles. Thank you for blessing us with such a beautiful, beautiful song. It is timeless. Peace and blessings to you.

@@RULQQKN1959 From a Distance is credited as written by Julie Gold in 1985 and first recorded by Nanci Griffith in 1987. I searched, and the internet has no record of Marisha MacRae writing or recording the song.

Julie Gold has stated that she believes in an immanent and beneficent God, and also thinks that people have a right to interpret the song any way they want, as with all art. She has stated that the song is about the difference between how things appear to be and how they really are.
