Lyrics:
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

My grandma would sing this song to me to get me to sleep, even now, at 16, when I stay at her house she’ll still sit with me and sing to me while I fall asleep. She’s the most kind and sweet woman I know.. love her more than anything ❤️❤️ Edit Aug 2022- my grandma passed away September 9th 2021. What I wouldn’t give to hear her sweet voice sing this to me again. I miss her so much everyday. She was my rock🤍

It# 1965 again and I think of Tony when I listen to this song, who called me to ask if I wanted to go to the NY Port Authority to see him off to Duluth and say goodby. He said he'd pick me up at 5 but he never came. I had him paged at the PA but he never answered. We had a short but wonderful romance and I think of him a lot. I suppose he got sent to Nam...he never came back...never saw him again...but I will always remember him.

My Grandma was 26, married with 3 kids, when John Denver released this song. Three years later my mom was born. My grandma would feel overwhelmed that the fact that she had 4 kids before the age of 30, and things could get stressful. She would use this song to relieve her stress. Forward 56 years (now 2020) when I play Leaving on a jet plan or country roads on my phone, she goes into this place of happiness, and knows all the lyrics, and so she sings her heart out. I feel when the time comes that my grandma leaves this earth, she will be singing this on her way up to the gates to meet the heavenly father. #JohnDenverLegend.

I love people who know how to sing when things get stressful. They are some of the best people. The parents and grandparents are really among those whose job it is to help relieve the kids' stresses the most too, and one of the very best ways to do that is by singing Congrats to your grandma 👵 because she obviously knows all the right things to do when times get tough and/or stressful. She sings. ^____^

I am 14 years old. It's 2020. During the pandemic. I was having a horribly depressing time, what with online school and lack of communication with people other than my family. Lying on my bed, I was thinking of a thousand things when I unconsciously started humming this song so I searched it up. I don't know why but I knew every single lyrics of this song. I know about John Denver and I've heard his songs before but to be honest I don't remember why exactly I know about him, considering this dude was popular about 50 years ago and I am a Gen Z kid. However, when I started listening to this song tonight, I felt myself tearing up because it was so beautiful and I felt like I was trying to remember some lost memory from the past, from my childhood but I just couldn't remember what memory exactly led me to thinking of this song... I know no one is probably going to read this, considering no one's ever liked my comment before but just felt like mentioning anyways. Edit: Thank you everyone for all the beautiful replies.... and the likes! OH MY GOODNESS! Never have I ever thought i'd get 99 likes in a comment... LIKE EVER... He told his manager if he were to die he would want die flying his plane, and he did. His first wife Annie never wanted to come on the road with him because she was a recluse and didn’t like all the energy of concerts and people. All he ever wanted was for her to come with him. She divorced him after he had a road affair because he couldn’t fathom the loneliness. He always loved her though even up until his death. He would send her thousands of roses every year on her birthday to her apartment in Aspen. Even with his second wife and little girl, he never didn’t make time for her. He was a beautiful person and I hope he is flying high looking down and feeling through all the nature he loved so much.

It's a shame he was supposedly a nasty drunk and sawed their marital bed with a chainsaw. I think John was a wonderful man, but he was just like all of us. (Check wikipedia)
@CanadianAvian
@CanadianAvian 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but it's also a shame that he died. He wasn't even supposed to be flying, as the FAA revoked his certifications, not to mention the fact that the way the fuel selector and gauge were positioned in a way that the pilot could not reach them during stable flight. The right tank was at about half capacity, the left a quarter. He was offered a refueling, of which he turned down because of his short flight time. There's just so many factors in his death that could be so easily avoided, and it really is a shame. Stick to Cessnas, kids.
@CanadianAvian
@CanadianAvian 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, shortly after his death and others, the FAA required manufacturers to position all absolutely necessary gauges and controls in easily reachable locations, including the fuel selector and gauge. So, the FAA was a little bit late on that one.

@Disgruntled Pelican Yes it is immoral. But loneliness was not the excuse, it was his reason. Though loneliness is a terrible thing, he still committed an immoral act towards his wife, and loneliness was the cause. But I don't think that makes him an immoral man, although, he did have his vices as a drunk. I don't know much about his second marriage, but hopefully he became a better husband with his little girl. Nonetheless, he was a great musician and his songs evoke happiness and virtue, even if Denver himself was not a completely virtuous man. We remember him for what he made us feel with his eternal music, not for his mortal flaws.

I met John Denver in the 1970,s at Sydney airport at the TAA terminal while he was on tour, spoke to him for about 15 mins (took some photos), with my girlfriend and sister, he was really gracious and pleasant. We found that we had a couple of things in common - same birthday and we had both studied Architecture (I was a 2nd year student) He was very popular in Australia at that time and all his shows were sold out. I took my Father to his Sydney Sports-ground show and it was excellent. A 3 hour concert, including The Sydney Symphony Orchestra, He found common ground with a lot of people through his music. His work for the environment will always be commended. RIP

Even when i was very little, i got incredibly strong emotions from this. She would start to tear up and it would make me sob uncontrollably. In the context of my grandpa, the lyrics sting even more. My parents gifted me this particular album on my twelfth birthday. I distinctly remember that this song was the first one on the first CD (there were two discs).As a pilot now, I still get the goosebumps when this track comes on. Way back in '97 as a four year old child, I recall receiving the news of his death on the news ticker. But I didn't know who he was and what the world lost on that fateful day. Mr. Denver, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. This song has seen me through toughest of times, in both grief and joy. I wish you were here. With Love from India.

Only the tragic respect for everyone from Bunker Hill, to Antietam, right through to Guadalcanal and Tarawa, Khe San, Faluja, and on goes the sad list of loss and courage................ps: My grand pa was in a Belgian trench in 1917. He saw what the big rats do. He saw humans sucked into the mud. He made it though. Mortar wound in the ankle, bullet wound under the left ear. But it was a different world. A shred of decency existed. They really did sing with Germans at Christmas in some places. But then officers would chase everyone back to theyre positions. But at least there was that brief light of humanity.

*I greatly enjoy John Denver's songs and he only got better as he got older. His song, "Calypso" is one of my favorites. All that said, Denver's song, "Leaving On A Jet Plane" brings back the 1960's as few songs of that era can. Even so, and I must confess, Mary Travers rendition of this song (lead singer for "Peter, Paul, & Mary") is the quintessential version. She imbues it with the pathos that Denver clearly intended, but that only her voice could evoke. That said, thank you, John, for writing this. You wrote it from the heart, and it shows.*
