My grandpa grew up in West Virginia and this was one of his favorite songs. We used to play this song on our guitars all the time. He passed to cancer recently and I listen to this song whenever I’m missing him. Thanks John Denver for the many memories your song made.

I'm not even an American, but I'm a Korean who has left my hometown and is working in another country. It's a holiday in Korea, but I'm living in another country away from my hometown. Listening to this music heals me and feels like I'm in my hometown, Even though it's a city that's not rural :).music transcends borders and timelessness. I went to college for a year in West Virginia and this song played constantly. I don't know why, but it makes me tear up every time I hear it. The fact that this guy wrote a song in 1971 that everyone around the world can relate to is just incredible. I wish he was alive to see the impact he left on the world.

You're absolutely right when you say everyone around the world can relate to it. While visiting Egypt 25 years ago, I stepped into a Cairo hotel elevator and met a young man as well as an older man who wore a traditional djellaba, turban, and long white beard. The younger man seemed a little confused by my western-hemisphere clothing: "You look Arabic, but..." "I'm from the United States." "Oh. Whereabouts?" "West Virginia." The older man then smiled and started singing "Country roads, take me home..." One of my favorite memories!

I grew up in Grand Rapids Michigan, born and raised. But I had a brother who moved to Raliegh NC when I was about 8-9. So we'd make that road trip a couple times a year for about 5 years. Best memories of my life was going through those blue ridge mountains. I loved road trips as a kid and seeing the rolling hills turn to mountains and beautiful scenery takes me back. There was one hotel in WVA in particular you could get unlimited bacon

Believe me, West Virginians have this song ingrained in their DNA. When I was in Army boot camp, 1978 at Ft. Knox Ky, a lot of my fellow trainees were from there. When I would first meet anybody from there and ask “where are you from?”, they would answer: “Almost Heaven---oh, I mean West Virginia!!”.👍
