John Denver sang "Country Roads" at West Virginia University (WVU) on September 6, 1980, to dedicate the new Mountaineer Field. It is now a fun tradition for fans to sing 'Country Roads' after every Mountaineer victory. I think nostalgia for the place where we were born/raised touches all hearts and makes this song universally loved.

I am from West Virginia and back in the early 70s he put on a free concert on the capital lawn. He was likely singing of western Virginia, but we claimed it as our own. Many people did not seem to know that WV is a separate state from VA. Our daughter always called her grandma Mountain Momma!

A good friend of mine, first met John when he was still known as John Deutschendorf. It was in the hay day of Los Angeles folk music scene. They stayed friends for a very long time, even were roommates for a short time. Years later, back here in Colorado, John was to play at a famous Hotel and asked my friend's band to open for him. When their equipment trailer was late arriving to the venue, John said he would instead open for them. RIP

I think why this song resonates with people and is universally loved is because the words evoke nostalgia of the coming home to the place that you hold dear and where you were nurtured.

In the summer of 1971 we were driving from our home in WV to Key West FL where my brother was stationed in the Navy. About the time we hit Georgia we heard this song for the first time on the car radio. I'll never forget my mom saying he's singing about WV ! I bet we heard it at least a dozen times on that trip end ended up knowing every word. Still chokes me up to this day.

I love that these lyrics are written in almost a 'stream of consciousness' style. He uses sentence fragments to describe the place and it's like he's remembering things as he's driving along. I'm not sure if that was intentional, but it works really well in this song.

You might take a few minutes to google West Virginia. Many novels have taken place there. It’s a place of such contrasts . Poor. Highly conservative. Gorgeous scenery. Incredible music. The preservation of the old ways of speaking and craftsmanship. Welcoming and yet keeps you at a distance at the same time. I’ve driven through there and spent a day ir two is all. Natural beauty surrounds you. If you ever get over here, Saeed, try to give yourself enough time to sample different regions of the country. The US is about the same size as Europe, so plan accordingly. 😁

I always appreciate when reactors listen to John Denver. His songs and performances are worth recalling. I know from watching your channel that you appreciate the lyrics. I hope I am not repetitive (or presumptuous) recommending some of his earlier songs, like: "Rhymes and Reasons," "Follow Me," "Aspenglow," "Isabel," "Poems, Prayers and Promises," "All of My Memories," "Casey's Last Ride," (a personal favorite) and "The Eagle and The Hawk." These are not songs that are typically listened to, or reacted to and they are well worth the time and attention.

John Denver is Canadian he has a very long name so he changed it to Denver because he loves Colorado! He has a lot of beautiful songs ! Back in his earlier career he wore real thick eye glasses and then he got that LASIK eye surgery because he wanted to fly an airplane and that's how he died! He got hit by one of those big birds at the beaches! The news said he could have lived but he chose to hit the rocks in crash so he wouldn't hit the people at the Beach! He died a hero's death, R.I.P John 💔🎸🎶💟☮️‼️

Seems you are mistaken on his birth home being as a Canadian. If you look it up.... John Denver was born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr., on December 31, 1943, in Roswell, New Mexico, to parents Henry John and Erma and that name being of German American heritage. Perhaps you are thinking of Gordon Lightfoot.... also a folk artist and he is Canadian.

I assume Harrison Ford’s was a manufactured plane. Yes, after so many chances of a devastating end, one should have a pilot or co-pilot and some mechanic to check the plane before each flight. Wasn’t Denver’s plane a kit/experimental and unfortunately he was not able to switch tanks because his clothing was preventing it.

As good as JD was live, I recommend starting with the studio versions of his music. The arrangements and engineering are masterful, despite the "folk/pop/country" vibe. As you can tell by John's invitation for the audience to sing along, his live performances were more celebrations of shared love of his songs than they were performances of the pure music.
