Save the tiger is a fantastic film, shame the film industry cut short his career

'Save the Tiger' is terrific. And Avildsen had the guts to straight-up tell Jack Lemmon that he wasn't going to allow any Jack Lemmon-shtick (double-takes, rolling eyes, etc.) And Lemmon, a consummate pro, put himself in Avildsen's hands and won a well-deserved Oscar.

His movies were a great inspiration to me growing up! That's the reason for my channel name. :)

I've gotten to meet the director of this documentary Derek Wayne Johnson, a few times, and was even at the premiere of one of his previous movies, 'Scrape'. This was because I lived in his hometown, and was briefly married to his cousin.....as was 5 other men before me.

Any director is lucky if they even sniff the kind of timeless classic that Rocky or the Karate Kid have become. But to do it twice? That's rarefied air.

Great documentary. I always felt that Saturday night fever was like Rocky type of film. You could easily make Travolta's Tony a cousin of Rocky Balboa.

This is so obscure it’s not even on PB.

Avildsen's direction wasn't the reason Rocky 5 was bad, it was Stallone's screenplay (and I love Stallone, but it was his fault). Rocky 5 didn't need to have Rocky getting brain damage, losing his money, and going back to his old neighborhood. The movie should've been about Rocky fighting one more time, and giving a underdog fighter, a shot at the title. The movie would've bring the series full circle.

Rocky had a fucking robot butler in IV, I think V was doomed no matter what.

@Trinidad Botello: The same could be said of The Karate Kid Part III. The screenplay Robert Mark Kamen turned in was not that good, and it was hastily rewritten, just prior to the start of filming since Colombia Pictures was in a big rush to have another squeal to a hit film of theirs for the summer of 1989. Kamen himself even said that the script he turned in was far from one of his best works. Thankfully, John Avildsen's other movie from 1989 Lean On Me starring Morgan Freeman is worth watching from what I have heard.

Huh. I always thought Sly directed Rocky. I guess he just wrote it.

@HitchensImmortal: Sly Stallone made his directorial debut on the movie Paradise Alley (1979). As the documentary points out, Stallone stepped in to direct Rocky II since John Avildsen choose to direct anther movie instead. Stallone would go on to direct and write Rocky II, III, IV and Rocky Balboa.
