On 19th November, 2018 at Birmingham Town Hall, John Lennox delivered a talk 'Cosmic Chemistry: Do Science and Christianity Mix?', followed by an extended time of Q&A, featuring questions from the audience.
Here is one of his answers.
This event was put on by IS FAITH REASONABLE?, a partnership of Birmingham based churches and Christian organisations that exists to bring as many people as possible into the ongoing conversation about faith and reason.

"It's not a religion; it's a relationship." Pure gold, and something I am taking with me to many future conversations.

In any real conversation between different views, that is meaningless. If it's a relationship, then that relationship requires people believe christianity is true, so it is still very much a religion.

@@mansonandsatanrock I get it. I'm addressing your definition of the term "religion". If to believe something is true makes it a religion, then evolutionists, atheists, etc. are very religious by this definition.

@@AdamHayekMilton Not so, because evolution being true doesn't depend on whether one believes it is true or not. It just is. Just like gravity, sure you are free to doubt it, but you are not free from the consequences which can be proven if you jump off a cliff for example. The same cannot be said for Christianity, it is not true as a matter of fact.

here is some truth not lies If you are gay or transgender and know someone who is, this is important information! Sexual orientation is determined in the womb during fetus development. Various hormones are introduced at specific times to accomplish this. The fetus plays no part in this process. A person is born with predetermined physical, biological & psychologic features. It is, therefore, not a choice & consequently not a sin & not immoral. It is a natural path of our evolution & found commonplace in nature. Medical research in this area clearly explains this process. Those who believe it is an abomination do so based not on facts but on religious authority. It is their right to believe this and I understand them. It must be made clear however, it is based on religion not science. If you are truly interested in the truth based on knowledge, the book Gay, Straight & the Reason Why by Dr. Simon Levay explains this with numerous research articles. If you want to understand the truth & have respect for others & yourself, this book will help. It also has, unlike the bible written over 2000 years ago by men that had no understanding of science, an extensive bibliography. I strongly recommend the book. If you chose to respond to me, please read this book &/or the numerous articles referred to in the reference section before hand. The public must be exposed to facts & knowledge. It is an obligation for those who know the truth & must defend it. Don’t let the religious pull you down to their level of ignorance. Peace

With all due respect what makes a person Gay/Bi/Trans/whatever is actually engaging in the acts, despite what they might have going on hormonally. In saying that, I am definitely not judging, looking down upon or condemning them, especially since I'm just as stained from sin as them. I hope nothing but the best for those who have chosen to be a part of those groups and that they receive Jesus into their life's.

@@dan69052e “why” doesent matter. I don’t really care if someone is born gay or trans, or if it’s a choice that’s made, and God doesent care either. It’s a sin. Period. I’ll love those people all the same, and it’s not my place to condemn them. But someone being born a type of way doesent give anybody a free pass to blatantly sin. I was born with the inclination to want to have sex with any pretty woman that comes my way, but that’s a sin too so it is what it is. Not everything we want is ok to have.

@@johngoldsworthy7135 I disagree. Buddhism teaches an incredibly subjective view of existence, specifically a subjective view of morality, of self, and that to achieve enlightenment or nirvana, one must shed these ideas. They believe there is no real moral good or bad - there is no I or you. Whereas, Christianity is rooted in completely opposing doctrines. There is a moral good and evil. Our actions matter and no amount of philosophy or shedding of the mind/spirit from this world will bring salvation. In fact, Jesus calls Christians to be actively involved in this world. It’s why other denominations criticize the monastic traditions of Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy.

I would not choose any religion, because religion is man reaching up to God. No matter how hard we try we cannot do it. However, there is one faith in which God reaches down to man and meets man's needs. That is Jesus our Creator became man and meets the demands of God and through the Lord Jesus Christ every man, woman & child can enjoy a personal relationship with God.

Piety is good, and all which you mentioned are good things. But the action themselves is not an end in themselves. We pray to keep in relationship with God, we fast to exhibit self-control, so that we might be able to act properly when we most need it and offer up suffering such as God did. We do Good such that we might love our neighbor as we love ourselves. but these actions end up working us to being more aligned with God’s will. If done with true and proper intention. And the key thing is if people truly believe in Jesus, they will be changed. St. Paul’s letter to the Romans discusses it and I would recommend checking it out.

In other words christianity is based on faith on a relationship not evidence based religion.

Sure he may have didn't talk enough about the evidence but keep in mind he never said that you could PROVE it to be right either. For example, you can't even PROVE that without a doubt your mom loves you. Based on the evidence that's displayed between your relationship, that can lead you to conclude that she probably does love you for example. And he's saying that christianity if you're basing religion in the wrong definition, is more of a relationship with God in anyways because you don't have to EARN your way into heaven. You just accept him.

Actually I didn't have Christian parents. None of my friends were Christians and I grew up where the majority of everyone I met were non believers, I don't think I knew anyone growing up (now that I think about it) who was a Christ follower. My environment was one of materialism and self. I'm a Christ follower today. Mostly because i grew up and realized all of the lies told in the world about theories which are still theories today yet are taught in schools across America and I realized how foolish that was, it was like adults teaching kids Santa Clause is real. I'm one of those cases that proves environment, parents, disciplines, etc. are not the basis for shaping an individual. It is the individuals choice to be who they are.

This is just an objectively wrong statement, and is completely ignorant of everything Lennox said within the first 50 SECONDS of this video. He defines "faith" by the Biblical sense of the word, as "trust". To reword your statement: "If there is evidence there is no need for trust". Yeah, you don't HAVE to trust your wife, even though theres plenty of evidence you can trust her. The point is that, in the Biblical sense, "faith" is an action we take as a response to the evidence, and that is to confess our sins and accept Christ as our savior.

If you had been indoctrinated in the culture of Hinduism, you would be taught that Krishna (at one time spelled Chrishna, before the Christians plagiarized the word Christ) came to earth to save only those of the Hindu faith. Christianity is very much a religion. I also was raised in a Christian environment, but could never believe that my soul would be saved, while the souls of others who were not Christian would be lost to salvation. That teaching smacked/smacks of deception, and suggests that all devotees in all other religions will not be saved. Religion should be a write-off.

The apostles had plenty of evidence to believe in Jesus, you know, his miracles, his words, hearing the testimony of John the baptist, and of the Father himself from heaven! They saw Jesus resurrected from the dead and so on.. The first belivers heard them speak in their languages at pentecost, miracles were performed by their hands, gifts of the Spirit ect! The apostle Paul that wrote the hebrews saw Jesus for himself, we now have the testimony of these men, they laid their life for their faith, we have historical evidence of Jesus, testimony of the Holy Spirit within us, testimony of our brothers and sisters how Jesus appered to them, how Jesus transformed their life, how He transformed our life... Miracles are done today in the name of Jesus and as the men of old we too have the scripture to search and see the fulfillment of prophecies in Jesus and also in the world! So do you think that our faith is blind? No we have plenty of evidence, natural, historical and supernatural.. Faith without evidence is for example believing in Santa claued or some other myths, god of pagans! God bless!
