great video with all the parts in greatly explained just two minor details in main riff: it's A to E not C#minor - first of all it would be C# minor 7 but since the song is in E i think E makes more sense second I think that last chord change in main riff alternates, once its E to A and sometimes it's B (4th fret) to A
@LeighFugeGuitar3 жыл бұрын
I think it’s all about how you perceive and visualise the chord. C#min shares the same triad makeup as an Emaj, so they function the same way, and they even sound the same in that arena. The C#m7 could also be interpreted an an inversion of E as an E/C# Same with the other chord. The E I refer to it based off a CAGED shape, it’s technically an E/A because of the bass note I’m playing. You could also imagine this as a B6sus4 with an A in the bass, which functions as a Bmaj, which is why it doesn’t sound out of place. I think a lot of chord based harmony is how you hear it and what makes you play it better.
@blobikon71643 жыл бұрын
@@LeighFugeGuitar sure any major chord is basicaly minor7 from relative minor key my point was that song is in E major and overal sound of main chord sequence is major so naming it E makes more sense at least for me there's one more thing i've noticed in your otherwise great video those diads funky riffs he is playing in different positions using D and G strings for first and third chord and A and D (like you do) for remaining chords

Awesome video and great playing! I think the first verse (when he says roll me all night long) the chords are A/E/E/A -exactly like you're playing. However on the next go around (when he says use me till im gone) i believe the chords are A-slide up to B/B then back to A. Minor difference and both sound good...There's alotta TOTO in this song and the keyboard player in TOTO would often slide up to B if they were hangin on A.
@LeighFugeGuitar3 жыл бұрын
Hey Owen, Thanks for checking the video out. Yeah I saw that change. Technically, the E I play (Which is technically an E with an A in the bass) could also be viewed as a B6sus4 which would also function as a variation of a Bmaj chord (Which is why it doesn't sound out of place). It's VERY Toto! I guess John was binging on his 80s rock before writing this haha!

So I'm thinking something different for that lick that you said is tricky in the solo at 18:10. I think he bends the 17th on the b string and then hits the 12th fret of the e string. What do you think?
@LeighFugeGuitar3 жыл бұрын
Hey! That's also a great take on it. I've seen someone else play it that way too. I love that it can be interpreted in different ways. I went for the single string approach because to my ears it sounded more like the notes were gliding together. I did consider it the way you just explained, but to my ears it didn't sound as pleasing. I'd love to see a close up of how John does that line!

This is very well done! But it’s missing one thing in your tone. Can you tell me how he gets that 90’s Clapton tone? (Is that a wah wah half way pushed?) I want that sound lol
@LeighFugeGuitar3 жыл бұрын
Thanks William, I didn't try to replciate the tone of the track, I just used a JM style tone that I always use for this kind of thing. I'm using a Line 6 Helix in the video for my tone. In the video he looks to be using a combination of a Soldano, Dumble, Roland JC120 and something else. The Soldano will definitely add to the Clapton vibe.

I'm trying to learn this song but I just can't use my thumb like that, any tips?
@Andrew-oj2yr3 жыл бұрын
Just keep practicing guitar, it takes time, tip: whenever you're playing a bare chord, use your thumb to cover low E string, instead of point finger
@LeighFugeGuitar3 жыл бұрын
Hey Julian, Great question, it takes a little while to get that technique down. The trick is to try to stretch your thumb over, which at first is the hard part. A good way to get used to it is to learn a D/F# chord, which is a D major chord (played in the usual way) but with your thumb playing the 2nd fret of the Low E string. This gets you used to using the thumb, then once you start to feel comfortable using your thumb, try some of the chord shapes in this lesson. The chords in this lesson are essentially just your regular barre chord shapes, but John plays them in this way (Breaking them into a triad and a root note) which he got from Hendrix.
