Mayer is clearly once in a lifetime artist - he uses space as much as he uses notes and it is just genius. Really don’t know if anyone is as talented as JM (including Clapton, Hendrix, etc even though he would probably be the first to say they are better). JM obviously practices a lot but he is also a natural.

What he does from 4:13 to 4:25 is unbelievable. Not just technique-wise, but the melody in the notes and the soul in it. Overall a great solo by John. Whoever was playing off on the side of the stage sounded great too.

This is one of the bests John Mayer solos, incredible!

this is one of his best - you can see the recent influence of Derek Trucks

+mike p you mean the slide he does? hes been doing that forever man. he destroys pentatonics and makes it look super easy. i think he does it in a performance during his live in la tour. same slide.
@mikepalethorpe8 жыл бұрын
Yeah around 4:13 - 4:36 - the slide phrasing...

Really good juxtaposition of a self-made master musician who worked his way from the very bottom and a kid who got thrown to the top with a contract made by a show that's been around for way too many seasons. Mayer just kicks it, he was completely in his groove for this performance.

Definitely a good point but Phillip Phillips is very talented himself. I'm not a huge fan of American Idol but when it gives a genuinely good guy the opportunity to get his music out there like it did for Phillip, I support it
@soonerred2210 жыл бұрын
Phillip's guitar player is really good. Then mayer stepped back up and put him in his place. Nice.

That's Errol Cooney. They've been touring together for 6 months at this time. I was there. John was nothing but humble that night. They had a great time jamming together.
@imsura35544 жыл бұрын
I actually enjoyed mayers first part of the solo more than Errol's very nice but typical or a little boring pentatonic licks. granted, mayers was also pentatonic mostly, but it was not the typical licks

you really think John just showed up? lmao Also He probably came cause Phillip Phillips was going to be on his tour next (which he was his starting man for his 2014 tour)

I've seen Mayer and Clapton live multiple times, but that's somewhat irrelevant to this comment. This cover is a B+ at best. Before you respond, search the Clapton live versions with Tim Carmon killer keyboard solos after the Clapton solos. There are 4 or 5 great ones. MSG / Hyde Park / multiple South America vids from 2011. Blows this cover away. You'll be happy. Trust me.

Agreed 100%. This is great but nothing will top 24 nights, MSG and Hyde Park. Peak Clapton!!!
