The weirdest thing is that when McEnroe had those classic matches against Connors, I would have expected Connors to slowly grow into the statesman, and Mac to shrink into his childish behavior and immature persona. It has been the exact opposite. Mac is just such an incredible ambassador for our beautiful sport. We are lucky to have him now have this kind of effect on the following generations.

John McEnroe has the most combined tennis titles (singles and doubles) of any male player in the history of professional men's tennis. At one time, he was number one in both singles and doubles at the same time. Unlike so many top players today, McEnroe would play singles and doubles at grand slam events, sometimes on the same day. He has 77 singles, 77 doubles and 1 mixed titles. Then there's Martina Navratilova. Navratilova has a total of 354 titles (singles 167, doubles 177 and mixed doubles 10). I don't think this will ever be beaten today. Different times and all. Still, there are many great tennis players out there.
@astonm.81733 ай бұрын
Times were different, the top bracket was much smaller those days, matches weren't as demanding, especially doubles.
@NorsePJ3 ай бұрын
@@astonm.8173 I know all that. Matches are just more demanding now because fewer players serve and volley. They have far less skill at the net these days, so nearly all players just stay back a rally back and forth. For me, the golden period is long gone.
